Today’s Challenges Present System must meet challenges it was not designed for: – A digital society which demands higher reliability and power quality – Increasing number of power marketing transactions – Increased use of renewable and distributed generation – Cyber-security and terrorist attack
3
The Current G,T&D System
4
Power generation Hydel Thermal Nuclear Non conventional
5
Cost of electricity …… The cost of electricity (typically cents/kWh, Euro/kWh, Euro or $/MWh) generated by different sources is a calculation of the cost of generating electricity at the point of connection to a load or electricity grid. It includes the initial capital, discount rate, as well as the costs of continuous operation, fuel, and maintenance.
6
Non conventional energy sources o Solar o Wind o Biomass o Tidal
7
Problems with non conventional except tidal source Solar continuos generation not possible. high cost. not possible in rainy season. Wind according to wind speed only not possible at all places high cost of wind turbine.
8
Tidal power Continuous power generation Possible at all sea shores No pollution Eco friendly Power conversion easy
9
Tidal power plant operating with… Sea tidals consists high potential energy Turbines converts pe into mechanical energy Generators converts ME into electrical transmission
10
Tidal power: Tidal power, also called tidal energy form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power - mainly electricity. Historically, The incoming water was contained in large storage ponds, and as the tide went out, it turned waterwheels that used the mechanical power
11
Advantages of tidal power potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power. many recent technological developments and improvements, both in design (e.g. dynamic tidal power, tidal lagoons) and turbine technology (e.g. new axial turbines, cross flow turbines), indicate that the total availability of tidal power may be much higher.
12
Places where tidal power is generated…. Tide mills have been used, both in Europe and on the Atlantic coast of North America. In INDIA… Gujarat is planning to host South Asia's first commercial-scale tidal power station. The company Atlantis Resources planned to install a 50MW tidal farm in the Gulf of Kutch on India's west coast, with construction starting early in 2012. [ [
13
Recent power generation trend with tidal power Tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power. Among sources of renewable energy, tidal power has traditionally suffered from relatively high cost and limited availability of sites with sufficiently high tidal ranges or flow velocities, thus constricting its total availability.
14
Some Disadvantages of tidal power…. Tidal power has traditionally suffered from relatively high cost and limited availability of sites with sufficiently high tidal ranges or flow velocities. Thus constricting its total availability. Economic and environmental costs may be brought down to competitive levels.
15
Transmission sector In general we use 1phase transmission 3phase transmission poly phase transmission systems
16
Poly phase transmission system.. Poly phase systems have three or more energized electrical conductors carrying alternating currents with a definite time offset between the voltage waves in each conductor. Poly phase systems are particularly useful for transmitting power to electric motors
17
Advantages of using 3phase transmission system The power transmitted by the single-phase system is simply the voltage multiplied by the current. But in 3phase power transmitted is 1.732times voltage multiplied by current. Thus the three-phase system transmits 73% more power but uses only 50% more wire.
18
Recent power transmission trend Currently we are using 6phase transmission system rather than 3phase transmission…… Six phase transmission system: Part of multiphase power system. Due to effect of harmonics,6phase machines and systems are not popular.
19
Advantages of 6phase transmission system: Increased power transfer capability by 1.732 times. Better effeciency Better voltage regulation. Greater stability Greater reliability.
