Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07 Operation Information Management at the Swiss Light Source Andreas Lüdeke of the Swiss Light Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute WAO '07 in Trieste

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 2 /14 Paul Scherrer Institute Swiss national research center 1300 employees Swiss Light Source Proton facility: 1 MW cw beam – Spallation neutron source PSI West: Large Research Facilities Proscan SC cyclotron – Cancer therapy A. Facchetti, WEPMR10: The new PSI central accelerator control room

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 3 /14 Swiss Light Source Injector – 100 MeV Linac – Full energy booster, 3 Hz – Long booster in ring tunnel Storage ring – Circumference 288m – E = 2.4 GeV, 400 mA top-up – Beam stability < 1µm Beamlines – Currently ~ 16 beamlines

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 4 /14 Who's communicating? System controls & diagnostics, events Operators Sys. Experts Accelerator Users Management Feedback Controls Shift protocol Bug reports Event DB Shift protocol Meeting minutes How to's “Digital User Office” ID gap control Broadcast messages Beamline status Acknowledge msg. Bug reports How to's Documentation Meeting minutes Diagnostics Alarms Events Regulations Schedules Procedures Shift protocols Event DB Statistics

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 5 /14 Accelerator: Alarms Using standard tool: EPICS alarmhandler – Features alarm hierarchy, acknowledgment, scripts, alarm logging – Write alarm history to relational database – Tool to browse and filter alarms, alarm tables for shift protocols PHP web interface to alarm history data

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 6 /14 Accelerator: Data Archives Using standard tool: EPICS channel archiver – Several 10 kHz data logging, – Sampling defined per channel, – Retrieval tool for very fast o retrieval, o filtering, o data correlation,... PHP web retrieval interface – Plot and export data – Up to 100 channels per plot – Two scalable Y axis

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 7 /14 Accelerator: Events Event database: automatic event logging – Define event types by rules: start and stop rule. – Each rule can read many control system channels. E.g. o Start “beamloss” → I beam < 50 mA o Stop “beamloss” → I beam ≥ I top-up & ID gaps closed. – Store in relational database: o Event start/end, event type and shift type. o Automatic links to event data Event cause assignment by machine expert: – Assign failure areas (LI, BO,...) and system (RF, VA,...) – Assign cause “fraction” in percent, provide failure description – Add additional links if desired

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 8 /14 Accelerator: Events cont. Event database web interface – Display all events and their related information for a time period – Allows to filter for event types and shift types

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 9 /14 Operator: Shift summaries Saved/loaded Msg. broadcasts Machine status Beamline status Beam current plot Known problems Disabled alarms Operator text Picture s Shift schedule Operator crew Automati c Copie d Manua l

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 10 /14 Operator: Wiki Wiki for operation documentation: SLS, HE, Proscan – Simple to use; doc. standard; templates for “Software”, “How-to's”,... – Already >130 articles

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 11 /14 Management/User: DUO Web Interface “Machine Manager” for yearly shift plan Assign shifts — User Operation — Shutdown — Machine tests — Beamline tests — User reserve time Pre-schedule shifts — Add comments Global reference — Beamline schedules — User schedules — Shutdown planning — Operation statistics

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 12 /14 Operator/Experts: Roster Shift crew plan — Operator manged — DUO shift-plan — Internet but passwd protected — Used for shift protocols On-call plan — Group managed — Year overview — Group overview No web edit — Extra applications — Database driven

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 13 /14 Management: Statistics Automated weekly operation overview web pages Plot archived channels — Beam lifetime — Avg. vacuum pressure — Beam sizes — Beam current List events from DB Calculate beam statistics — Availability — MTBF — MTTR — Beam dose Weekly statistics e-mail — “The year up to now”

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 14 /14 Conclusion You already have all of this information, too. Somewhere. – Interconnect your data – Allow for data references → data access by URL's – Use a central place to store your data → relational database Central documentation system → use a Wiki Automatize your information flow → script access for all data Standardize your applications: e.g. one PSI logbook application Take all information sources into account, e.g. – Control system data – Planning data like shift plans and personnel roster – Shift and meeting protocols

Andreas Lüdeke, Trieste, 24. Sep., WAO '07, 15 /14 Application Contacts Contact for the different applications: – Archiver web interface: Werner.Portmann, Gaudenz.Jud – Alarmhandler web interface: Andreas.Luedeke – Event logger, Event database: Andreas.Luedeke – Shift protocols: Andreas.Luedeke, DUO logbook: Markus.Knecht – Operation Wiki: Silvio.Foiera – DUO calendar: Alain.Bertrain, Markus.Knecht – Shift crew & on-call roster: Andreas.Luedeke – Operation statistics: Andreas.Luedeke (Just add “@psi.ch” and you get the email address)
