2 Purpose To highlight strategies that OCtech has implemented to promote STEM related career paths and to share a potential set of best practices for partnering with K-12 schools to enrich the STEM learning environment for students and to ultimately ensure the STEM talent pipeline for post- secondary institutions and employers.  OCtech: State of STEM within our service area  K-5: STEM Outreach Programs  6-8: After School & Summer Opportunities  9-12: Dual Enrollment & Experiential STEM Opportunities 2

9 The Boeing Effect With their 2009 purchase of its facility near the Charleston airport, “Boeing became the biggest economic development story in the state’s history…..The aircraft giant’s growing presence in the area has been like a magnet for other industry firms.” (CharlestonMag.com, March 2015) “Since Boeing’s arrival in SC, the aerospace cluster has added the same number of direct jobs per year as the automotive industry did between 1997 and 2007 following the arrival of BMW.” (SC Council on Competitiveness, 8/2014) “The state’s aerospace cluster has…one of the highest annual growth rates in employment of all industries in SC over the last decade, an average of 11.4%, approximately 8 times higher than the 1.4% average annual growth rate for the state overall.” (SC Council on Competitiveness, 8/2014) 9

11 · Dilemma: How do we get more students interested in manufacturing related STEM majors, which lead to the majority of the higher paying careers in our area? How do we ensure that our employers will have the skilled workforce they need to ensure their future success?  Solution: Partnerships between our Technical Colleges & their service area K-12 Schools that are aimed at enriching the student’s STEM learning environment and getting more students interested in manufacturing related STEM majors.  Resources available to assist OCtech’s Partnerships:  College Admissions Counselors, College Faculty, High School Instructors, Guidance Counselors, & PLTW network  Perkins Funds, Industry Support, NSF-ATE, RPOE, PBI, and other grants (as well as college funds)  College Equipment & High School Facilities The Dilemma & Solution 11

13  Addresses the Person-Environment Fit approach to career counseling  Do the student’s individual characteristics (i.e. needs, values, & abilities) match with the environmental characteristics of their desired career (i.e. demands, rewards, and setting)?  Providing additional STEM opportunities can allow students to sample various work environments to help inform their eventual choice in a career path. 20 History of Middle College In 1996 OCtech began conducting middle college courses on a small scale—one class offered in one high school. Today, OCtech's Middle College allows ambitious high school students in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties the opportunity to earn college credits before they graduate. Courses count toward high school requirements and translate into college credit hours for a two-year or four-year degree.  Middle College students make up 19% of the College’s overall enrollment  Classes are offered at high schools, online, and on campus  Middle College Pathways increase enrollment and serve as an early feeder program for new and emerging industries in our area 20
