What are fossil fuels? Fossil fuels are naturally accruing fuels, these are usually extracted for energy purposes. Fossil fuels are formed when natural matter like plants and animals are compressed over centuries. Natural Gases such Methane are also consider fossil fuels. These are gasses coming off of oil and other similar deposits. Methane is also made humans, animals, and from decomposing materials.

Burning Fossil Fuels Fossils Fuels are used to generate energy. Natural gas, coal, and oil are burned in large plants, these plants have large smoke stalks. The smoke coming out of these smoke stalks have carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. That contribute to polluting our air.

Why are fossil fuels bad? Fossil fuel are mainly made up of carbon and other toxins. Carbon is has two appearances black like pencil lead (graphite) and clear like diamond. When fossil fuels are burned these carbons are let back into the air as carbon dioxide which is a green house gas.

Why are fossil fuels bad? There are many other gasses emitted when burning fossil fuels. Some of these gasses are sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide. These both contribute to air pollution, this is when contaminants are let into our atmosphere. Sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide also contributes to acid rain. Nitrogen Oxide Sulphur Oxide

What is acid rain? Acid rain is a form of precipitation that is unusually acidic. This is created by a higher level of hydrogen ions. Acid rain doesn't only come in the form of rain it may also come in the form of snow, hail, and freezing rain.

Burning fossil fuels to Create acid rain ● When you burn fossil fuel sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide emitted into the atmosphere through smoke. These gasses will travel with the help of wind until it rains. The rain will drop and collect the gasses creating acid rain.

Effects of acid rain ● Soil- Soil normally has a safe amount of toxins in it. When acid rain is mixed with the toxins in the soil this creates a reaction which enable the plants to absorb the the harmful toxins. These plants/trees are now toxins if it doesn't die an animal may eat it and ingest the toxins. Now the animal has the the toxins. This process will go up the food chain until it reaches the main consumer.

Effects Of Acid Rain ● Buildings- Building are constantly being damaged by acid rain. When ever it rains the acid slowly eats away at the material, the worst damage will happen on limestone and other similar minerals.

Effect Of Acid Rain ● Trees- Trees usually rely on the rain for it nutrients but acid rain may do more bad than good. Acid rain is the reason for damaged leaves, stunted growth, loss of leaves and damaged back.

Effects Of Acid Rain ● Lakes and Water- Lake become more acidic when it rains acid, the acid changes the the water. This make it more difficult for fish to reproduce and the rain washes the toxins from the soil to the water. This poisons the fish and the poisons get passed on as animals with toxins get eaten until the main consumer.

Stop Acid Rain ● One way to lessen acid rain is to use a scrubber in smokestacks. A scrubber is a lime stone slurry that absorb the sulphur that causes acid rain. This is 90% effective. It is getting most of the harmful gases but the 10% of smaller particulates can not be caught by the filter

Burning Fossil Fuel Creates Acid Rain ● Acid Rain Is cause my burning Fossil fuel such as oil and coal. ● This is when the gasses Sulphur Oxide and Nitrogen Oxide are mix with rain ● When this rain falls it causes damage to trees, bodies of water, soil, animals, and buildings ● This can be reduced with a scrubber a lime stone slurry that catches 90% of harmful gases
