 Aim: What is found poetry and how can we begin to compose one?  Do now: Go over presentation guidelines Assessment at the end of poetry unit—Due May 1 st:  Compose a poetry book with all the poems you have written in my class. If you received a good grade on the poems revision is optional. If not, you must revise your poems for a higher grade.

Found poetry is poetry that you create using words from non-poetry sources  Newspaper articles  Novels  Short stories  Advertisements

 Read something that has words in it  Look for words or phrases, in whatever order, that you find powerful, moving, or interesting  Make a list of those words or cut them out  Go through your words and eliminate the ones you don’t like or don’t fit  Think about the overall feeling (tone) of your final list

 Take the words you have and arrange them in a way that makes a poem  You can add punctuation, letters, tense changes  Arrange the words so that they make a rhythm you like

 Grab a newspaper  Start cutting words, phrases, punctuation that you can use for your poem  When you have 30 or so words, go through your words and eliminate the ones that don’t work  Put the ones that do work into a poem  The poem must reflect a tone

 #1: Remember you must have a meaning to your poem!  #2: There must be a tone!  #3: There must be a title that contributes to the meaning!  #4: Your poem has to flow or have a rhythm or make sense!!  #5: Do not glue your poem unless you have 2 classmates read and give you advice on it and then get it checked by me!!

 Snaps and no claps!
