Aim: What is found poetry and how can we begin to compose one? Do now: Go over presentation guidelines Assessment at the end of poetry unit—Due May 1 st: Compose a poetry book with all the poems you have written in my class. If you received a good grade on the poems revision is optional. If not, you must revise your poems for a higher grade.

Found poetry is poetry that you create using words from non-poetry sources Newspaper articles Novels Short stories Advertisements

Read something that has words in it Look for words or phrases, in whatever order, that you find powerful, moving, or interesting Make a list of those words or cut them out Go through your words and eliminate the ones you don’t like or don’t fit Think about the overall feeling (tone) of your final list

Take the words you have and arrange them in a way that makes a poem You can add punctuation, letters, tense changes Arrange the words so that they make a rhythm you like

Grab a newspaper Start cutting words, phrases, punctuation that you can use for your poem When you have 30 or so words, go through your words and eliminate the ones that don’t work Put the ones that do work into a poem The poem must reflect a tone

#1: Remember you must have a meaning to your poem! #2: There must be a tone! #3: There must be a title that contributes to the meaning! #4: Your poem has to flow or have a rhythm or make sense!! #5: Do not glue your poem unless you have 2 classmates read and give you advice on it and then get it checked by me!!
