Starter You have 2 minutes to find out: 1.What is the fastest type of computer memory? 2.Where would you normally find it?

Lesson Objectives By the end of the lesson you will be able to: Identify types of magnetic and solid state storage Identify uses of backing storage devices Understand when certain types of storage should be used

88 Miles Per Hour! You should all be aware by now that there are MANY different types of memory and storage. How many can you come up with? RAMROM FlashHDD Cache SSD You REALLY should know these by now! You should know: What each does What they are used for Where they are used Whether they are volatile or not Whether they are STORAGE or MEMORY There will ALWAYS be exam questions on this, if you don’t know it, LEARN IT!

Task 1 Put the following in speed order – fastest first: – Magnetic Tape – RAM – Magnetic Hard Disk – Cache – Solid State Drive – Flash memory

Next… Using your list and the Internet find out what typically the S I Z E of each type of storage is. Don’t get hung up on the fact there are different answers – just aim for an average for each.

This shows… Looking at your list, it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot a rule/pattern/trend. Any ideas?

Rules As the amount of storage increases, the Read/Write speed of it slows Generally, as speed increases, so does the volatility. For example: – Cache and RAM are fast but Volatile – HDD and Tape are slow but Non Volatile

Task 2 – Copy the diagram Faster, but Volatile Slower, but NOT Volatile Cache RAM Solid State Drives Flash Drives Magnetic Hard Drives (Including External HDD’s) Magnetic Storage MEMORY – Volatile, NOT permanent, Stores open, running programs and data STORAGE – NON VOLATILE

Task 3 – Draw and complete in your books Type of StorageTypical Size UsesAdvantagesDisadvantages Magnetic Hard Disk Drive Portable HDD Solid State Drive Flash Memory Magnetic Tape

Ideal Answers Type of StorageTypical SizeUsesAdvantagesDisadvantages Magnetic Hard Disk Drive 250GB-3TBMain system or data drives in computers and laptops. Stores OS, Programs and data Mass storage, relatively quick, can handle very large files, very cheap Expected lifespan of 3-5 years, when they fail all data is gone, moving parts so wear out, susceptible to damage if knocked/dropped Portable HDD 250GB – 2TB Personal data backup and file transport As above, but with portabilityMore susceptible to damage due to being moved/transported often Solid State Drive 32GB – 256GB Quick system drives in high end computers and laptops (especially netbooks and “ultra books”) Very quick, less susceptible to damage. No moving parts. Can speed up system responsiveness. Fail in read only mode so data can be recovered Quite small sizes, can have limited life compared to magnetic hard drive (although this is improving), Still expensive compared to traditional HDD’s Flash Memory 512MB – 64GB Portable storage of digital media – i.e. photos, movie clips, small documents Very small, quick, convenient storage. Comes in multiple sizes. Very reliable and durable Larger sizes are expensive, easily lost Magnetic Tape Up to 5TBBackupsMassive storage, reliableMagnetic! Can be affected by magnets, is slow

Homework None this lesson!

Plenary Which is the fastest type of memory? Which is the slowest type of storage? What is the difference between memory and storage? What would you typically find in memory? What would you expect to find in storage?
