Year 3’s Maths trip LONDON
3
Before we left we worked hard to plan our route. We took a vote about which landmark Ash class children would most like to see. As you can see by looking at our bar chart, Big Ben was one of the most popular. Therefore we planned our route to make sure we saw it first! It was much taller in real life than we thought it would be!
4
Here is some of our work to show which landmark Ash Class most wanted to visit…
5
This is the timetable that we had to read to work out what time would be best to get the clipper at. We had to be careful that we read this time table carefully checking times against the clipper which was heading east. Our compass experts helped us with this! “We planned to get the Eastbound 12.08pm clipper from London Eye however there were too many people waiting so we had to wait 20 minutes until 12.28pm for the next one. We used the timetable to help us work out the time we had to complete some sketches.” - Christopher
6
“The clipper boat was so posh! The ride was exactly 24 minutes and 34 seconds long.” Jayden
7
Our group was in charge of counting the steps we took between the different landmarks. We used pedometers to count our steps. We estimated that our total amount of steps would be 4000. We found out using our pedometers that our actual total was a whopping 5565

In our team, it was our job to investigate the temperature of the air at different points which we decided before the trip, during the day. We predicted it would be hotter outside than it would be underground. We used a thermometer to measure the temperature using degrees Celsius. We found our prediction was wrong and it was actually warmer underground than it was outside. We thought this might be because there was lots of people on the train.
9
We recorded our results in a chart like this. It was important that every member of the team signed to say they agreed with the results being recorded.
10
“Our job was to check the compass readings when we arrived at each of our landmarks. We used them when we got home to help us map out our journey.” Tinaye
11
How much longer until lunch…
12
Our group was responsible for recording the time it took us to travel between significant landmarks using different methods of transport. Did you know it took us 17mins 21 seconds to travel on the tube from Liverpool St to Westminster. This was a long time for some of us to stand on a very busy and hot tube! We used stopwatches to measure time in minutes and seconds
13
“Our group recorded the time that we arrived at each landmark. It was important that we arrived at each landmark on time to make sure that we were able to spend enough time at each place. We did have to remind Miss McBride to speed up and slow down sometimes, we had a schedule to keep to!!” Reece Ribbins I wonder what time we could have arrived at the shard?
14
“We had such a good day, who knew maths could be that fun!” Miss Bates!
