Living or Alive?
5
Viruses Don’t Show Living Cell Characteristics Outside of a living cell, a virus is useless (carries out no functions on its own) However, once it invades its host cell it can reproduce (something living cells do) Therefore viruses are neither living nor non living matter. They are somewhere in between. They are non-cellular
6
What about scientific names?
7
Viruses are Not in the Taxonomy System They are not considered living (and are non-cellular) Therefore they cannot be classified Because they do not have a genus or a species they cannot be given a scientific name There are two methods for naming viruses –Viruses are named after the effects they cause (small pox) or the host they infect (bird flu)
