Thermodynamics

Questions: How did the calcium chloride change? I think Heat is…

Energy Energy is… the ability to do work or cause change Forms of Energy: Heat Light Radiation chemical potential energy kinetic energy mechanical energy Electrical energy

HEAT What is heat? –the energy that transfers from one object to another because of a temperature difference between the 2 objects –Chemists use the letter q as the symbol for Heat

The Law of Conservation of Energy In any chemical reaction or physical process: –Energy cannot be created –Energy cannot be destroyed –Energy can only change from one form to the next

Thermodynamics is… The study of energy transformations from one form of energy to another Usually we study the changes of energy associated with a system A system can be defined as an object or group of objects that work together. The system is separate from its surroundings Examples: a coffee pot your I-pod a car

Exothermic and Endothermic Processes Exothermic = the system gives off heat to its surroundings surroundings Endothermic = the system gains heat from its surroundings surroundings System Heat

Reflection When you pour cold water into a coffee maker and turn on the coffee maker, a few minutes later, hot coffee is in the coffee pot. Using the following terms, explain how energy flows through this system to cause this change. Use the following words in your response: ThermodynamicsHeat Mechanical energyelectrical energy Exothermicendothermic Systemsurroundings
