What is the USMLE? USMLE – The United States Medical Licensing Examination. The exam required to apply for a residency program in the US. 3 parts to this exam.

Exam Structure Step 1 – Testing basic knowledge from pre-clinical years. Step 2 – 1.Clinical Knowledge 2.Clinical Skills Step 3 – assesses ability to apply biomedical and clinical science in an unsupervised environment.

USMLE Scoring Step 1 and Step 2 are both out of 300. 2014 Average was 227. 240 + is thought to be a very good score.

Visas Visa Options J1 Visa H1-B Green Card/ American Citizenship

Features of the J1 Visa Requires acceptance into a residency program Limited time to allow you to complete training Requires STEP 2 to be completed Minimum of 2 years outside the US post training Or 3 years in an area which is ‘under resourced’ Not allowed to transfer to other visa’s

Features of the H-1B Visa Requires acceptance into a residency program Valid for 3 years and can be extended for another 3 Requires STEP 3 to be completed prior to application Can be exchanged to a work permit More difficult to gain sponsorship

When? Usually STEP 1 would be sat in 3 rd Year Summer UoN Students are recommended to do the exam : Second Year Summer Fourth Year Summer Take a year out after fourth year Once you graduate (If you feel like you can fit it in third year).. Or whenever you feel ready STEP 2 – After Fifth Year finals STEP 3 – Depending on the visa being applied for

Food for thought Cost of the USMLE : Step 1 & Step 2 CK ≈ $1100 + Each Step 2 CS ≈ $1700 Step 3 ≈ $830 + + Cost of flights and accommodation Retakes – Cannot retake a test if you pass it!
