North American Climate and Clean Energy Summit U.S., Canada, and Mexico Summit on Clean Energy, Climate and Conservation June 30, 2016 Producer: Ben Booker Edited by: Claire Carter Director: Afzal Bari

U.S., Canada, and Mexico Leaders Unveil Plan to Have Half of North America’s Electricity Come From Clean Sources June 30, 2016 | Ben Booker Source: Devin Henry, “U.S., Canada, Mexico Detail Continent-Wide Clean Energy Plan,” The Hill, June 29, 2016; Juliet Eilperin and Brady Davis, “U.S., Canada and Mexico Vow to Get Half of Their Electricity From Clean Power by 2025,” Washington Post, June 27, 2016. NORTH AMERICAN CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT Percent of North America’s Total Electricity Coming From Clean Sources* Includes Current Amount and Goal By 2025 What Are Clean Energy Sources? Clean energy sources are ones that are carbon-neutral and do no emit other types of pollutants. The major clean energy sources are hydropower, solar, wind and nuclear. Solar and wind have been some of the fastest growing energy resources in the U.S. while hydropower makes up a substantial portion of Canada’s electricity resources. *Does not include Central American countries 1

Canada Has Already Exceeded the Target So Much of the Effort Will Come From U.S. and Mexico To Hit Target June 30, 2016 | Ben Booker Source: Devin Henry, “U.S., Canada, Mexico Detail Continent-Wide Clean Energy Plan,” The Hill, June 29, 2016; Juliet Eilperin and Brady Davis, “U.S., Canada and Mexico Vow to Get Half of Their Electricity From Clean Power by 2025,” Washington Post, June 27, 2016 NORTH AMERICAN CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT Percent of Country’s Total Energy Coming From Clean Sources 2

Since U.S. Is the Largest Electricity Generator By Far, It Is Largely Incumbent Upon U.S. to Hit the Target June 30, 2016 | Ben Booker Source: Juliet Eilperin and Brady Davis, “U.S., Canada and Mexico Vow to Get Half of Their Electricity From Clean Power by 2025,” Washington Post, June 27, 2016; Natural Resources Canada, EIA. NORTH AMERICAN CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT ■ USA ■ Canada ■ Mexico Percentage of North America’s Electricity From Each Country* Estimates from 2014 and 2015 Government Statistics *Does not include Central American countries 3

North American Leaders Seek To Achieve Goal Through Better Innovation, Investment, and Efficient Appliances June 30, 2016 | Ben Booker Source: Juliet Eilperin and Brady Davis, “U.S., Canada and Mexico Vow to Get Half of Their Electricity From Clean Power by 2025,” Washington Post, June 27, 2016; White House, “North American Climate, Clean Energy, and Partnership Action Plan,” June 29, 2016; Noun Project: iconoci, Sitchko Igor, Gregor Cresnar, gira Park. NORTH AMERICAN CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT Main Proposals For U.S., Canada, and Mexico to Reach Clean Power Goal Increase Cross-border Transmission Lines Six transmission projects currently in review that would add 5,000 MW of cross-border transmission capacity Align and Increase Appliance and Equipment Standards Increase efficiency standards for appliances and equipment and standardize them to promote cross border trade Increase Green Innovation Promote Mission Innovation and larger North America Clean Energy Partnership to facilitate cross-border collaboration of clean energy companies Promote Clean Energy Projects and Development Increase overall public and private investments in renewable and nuclear energy projects with U.S. and Canada’s government service providers agreeing to purchase 100% of electricity from clean energy sources by 2025 4

The Summit Also Committed to Greening Infrastructure and Transportation and Taking Leadership on Climate June 30, 2016 | Ben Booker Source: Juliet Eilperin and Brady Davis, “U.S., Canada and Mexico Vow to Get Half of Their Electricity From Clean Power by 2025,” Washington Post, June 27, 2016; White House, “North American Climate, Clean Energy, and Partnership Action Plan,” June 29, 2016; Noun Project: Simon Child, Martin Vanco. NORTH AMERICAN CLEAN ENERGY SUMMIT Other Climate and Clean Energy Goals From North America Leader Summit Reduce Pollutants Mexico agreed to reduce methane emission 40-45% by 2025, matching U.S. and Canada’s pledge Additional pledges to reduce black soot and hydrofluorocarbons and other short term pollutants Environmental Conservation Coordinate efforts in order to save migratory species Collaborate to mitigate the impact of invasive species Foster conservation and biodiversity through education and investment Increase Transportation Standards and Green Infrastructure Increase motor vehicle and shipping efficiency to reduce emissions Invest in public transportation including clean energy refueling continental corridors Active, Global Leadership on Climate Change Ratify the Paris Climate Agreement Push G-20 to eliminate all fossil fuel subsidies Promote Montreal Protocol phase-down amendment on HFCs 5
