Course Offerings Day/night class schedule consistent from year to year but day of the week may vary Usually day/night alternates by class from term to term Counseling Theory day class in fall, offered nights in Winter Term Weekend Seminars offered at various times/days Inter-term courses offered periodically between terms Students may take 2 + 1 for Inter-term courses only (2 regular + 1 inter-term course = 9 hours) Otherwise, students may take a maximum of 6 hours/term Summer classes offered at various times/days Remember financial aid rules on full-time status Course Planning Surveys Your response to surveys helps us plan course offerings that benefit you Academic Year 2015 – 2016

3-Year Overview Psychology Background No Psychology Background Academic Year 2015 – 2016 Course work only 42 hours (including all required classes) Course work and applied training (Practicum/ Internship 1 & 2) Begin with 18 hours remaining Course work only 42 – 48 hours (including all required classes and Behavioral Science) Behavioral Science is a prerequisite for Research Design Course work and applied training Begin with 12 – 18 hours remaining Some students take all course work and then begin applied training Some students prefer taking first 10 weeks of Practicum without taking another class in that term Students may take “extra” classes during applied training

Applied Training Academic Year 2015 – 2016 Practicum takes 2 terms (20 weeks of curriculum) Students pay and enroll one time only for 2 terms of Practicum Students cannot begin Practicum in the Summer Term Students can use HDCN 6049 once in Practicum Internship 1 (scheduled meetings across 10 weeks) Internship 2 (scheduled meetings across 10 weeks) Students who have not completed within one year (5 terms) of beginning Practicum all contact hours required to complete their degree will be required to pay tuition for additional terms.

If you do not know or do not remember your advisor, find this information at my.SMU.my.SMU When do I see my advisor? You should contact your advisor when you have 12 hours in the program and again when you’ve reached 30 hours. How do I make an appointment? Some advisors have set hours each term, others see students by appointment. You should make initial contact via email. If you do not get a response from your advisor within 48 hours, please re-email your initial note. Remember, scheduling advisor meetings is the student’s responsibility. It is recommended (and, at some junctures, required) for you to meet with your advisor to review your master schedule and program performance. Making Appointments You should contact your advisor when you have 12 hours in the program and again when you’ve reached 30 hours. Advising appointments get booked quickly and are usually scheduled 2-3 weeks in advance. Please do not email your advisor the week before registration and expect an immediate appointment. When scheduling, please include the following in your email to your advisor: your goal to be met in the advising appointment; your current track; a phone number where you can be reached; your time(s) on campus for current classes or other availability.
