“Quotation Marks” By Sara and Ciarra

What are Quotation Marks? One of a pair of punctuation marks “”, or `` used chiefly to indicate the beginning and the end of a quotation in which the exact phraseology of another or a text is directly cited.

Rule #1 Use quotation marks to enclose a direct quotation – a person's exact words. Example : Melanie said, “ This car is making a very strange noise.” “ Maybe we should pull over,” suggested Amy.

Rule #2 Always be sure to place quotation marks at both the beginning and the end of a direct quotation. Example : Incorrect : She shouted, “ we can win, team ! Correct : She shouted, “ we can win, team !”

Rule #3 Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. Example : Mr. Johnson, who was working in his field that morning, said, " The alien spaceship appeared right before my own two eyes."

Rule #4 If a direct quotation is interrupted mid-sentence, do not capitalize the second part of the quotation. Example : " I didn ' t see an actual alien being," Mr. Johnson said, " but I sure wish I had."

Rule #5 Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks, even inside single quotes. Example : ● She said, “ he said, ' hurry up.'”

Rule #6 Use quotation marks to indicate titles of shorter works, such as songs, books, and TV shows. Example : The title of this essay is “ Freedom ” by David John.
