Lesson 11.5 & 11.6: 1.Homework Discussion 2.Proportions with Area 3.Proportions with Volume

Warm Up (from homework): Determine the value of x.

Activity #1: On graph paper, draw one right triangle with legs of 3 units and 4 units. Use Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse. Now draw a second right triangle with leg of 9 units and 12 units. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the length of the hypotenuse. Why are the two triangles similar? What is the ratio of the corresponding sides? (The scale factor.)

Activity #1 Continued: Find the perimeter of each triangle. What is the ratio of the perimeters? Summary: The ratio of the perimeters of similar figures is the same as the ratio of the ________.

Activity #2:

Area Practice #1:

Area Practice #2: An artist uses 200 tiles to create a tessellation design that covers a rectangle with dimensions 2 ft by 3 ft. He will cover a wall with dimensions 10 ft by 15 ft using the same design and tiles of the same size. How many tiles will he need to cover the entire wall?

Activity #3: Sketch a rectangular prism with dimensions 3x4x5 units. Now, sketch another rectangular prism with dimensions 9x12x15 units. Determine their volumes.

Activity #3 Continued:

Volume Practice #1: The right trapezoidal prisms are similar.

Volume Practice #2: A sculptor creates a small bronze statue that weighs 38 lb. She plans to make a version that will be four times as large in each dimension. How much will the larger statue weigh if it is also bronze?

Volume Practice #3:

Homework: P. 610-611: 1, 2, 4-8 P. 616-618: 1, 2, 5-8, 10, 12
