Important Dates Wednesday/Thursday 10/28-10/29/2015: Membrane and Molecular Transport Exam Friday 10/30/2015: Lab Report due for Grape Lab Monday 10/19/2015 Agenda: Notes on Diffusion Activity: Cell Membrane Foldable Activity: Cellular Membrane and Molecular Movement due Monday 9/15/2014 for 25 Points Homework: Finish Cell Membrane and Molecular Movement Worksheet

Other Stuff in the Cell Membrane! The cell membrane has a lot of stuff in it besides phospholipids. Some other stuff in the cell membrane are PROTEIN CHANNELS, RECEPTOR MOLECULES, AND CHOLESTEROL.

Cell Membrane Foldable  Draw and label picture of the cell membrane  Make sure to add color and label all parts of the cell membrane (Top Inside Flap of foldable)  List the functions of the cell membrane  Use the vocabulary you learned from today’s notes (Bottom Inside Flap)  Related Terms for Cell Membrane  What are other terms used to describe the cell membrane? (Bottom Inside Flap)

Other Stuff in the Cell Membrane! What that looks like: Protein channel Receptor molecule Cholesterol

Protein Channels Protein channels let molecules that can’t get through the cell membrane into the cell. We will talk about this more soon.

Receptor Molecules Receptor molecules receive signals from the rest of the body. We will talk about this more when we talk about hormones.

Cholesterol Cholesterol strengthens the cell membrane so that a cell can keep its shape!

DIFFUSION Think about it…: What would happen if someone farted in one corner of the room?!!!

Passive Transport  Requires NO energy  Particle go from high to low concentration  Three types of passive transport: 1.Diffusion 2.Facilitated Diffusion 3.Osmosis

What is Diffusion?  Diffusion is the movement of any substance from a higher concentration to a lower concentration until a balance is reached  Examples:  Spraying perfume in a room  Food coloring in water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STLAJH7_zkY

Diffusion Across a Membrane  Molecules will diffuse through a membrane until there is an equal amount on both sides. (Equilibrium)

What Happens Next?  After equilibrium has been reached, the molecules keep moving, but the balance remains the same.

Selectively Permeable Membrane  Molecules that are too big, can’t get through

Facilitated Diffusion If a molecule is too big to get across the cell membrane, it can get inside the cell by going through a protein channel. http://highered.mcgraw- hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/ animation__how_facilitated_diffusion_works.html http://highered.mcgraw- hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/ animation__how_facilitated_diffusion_works.html
