4 Desired Session Outcomes: Learn strategies developed collaboratively by high school and college math teachers to improve student success in high school and college math. Gain awareness of the need to reduce the number of high school graduates enrolling in developmental math courses in college and to increase college completion.

5 Of 5,003 high school graduates in the top 26 counties in the Texas panhandle in the 2009-10 school year: 978 or 19.55% were enrolled in Texas Public Universities 1,743 or 34.84% were enrolled in Texas Public 2-year Colleges 2,282 or 45.61% were not located in Texas Public Higher Education

6 Barriers to Educational Attainment Too many students take developmental education at the postsecondary level.

14 Topics for Math Journals Region 16 AVATAR team created list of topics from Algebra II that students need to know to be successful in College Algebra Also incorporated a set of “soft” skills students need to succeed in college
