“Laodicea lies at a major crossroads in the valleys of Asia Minor. The city was situated on a hill overlooking fertile valleys and majestic mountains. In Roman times, the city was an important center for administration and commerce. Court cases from the region were heard at Laodicea and funds were placed in the city's banks for safekeeping. Although damaged by earthquakes during the reign of Augustus (27 B.C.- A.D.14) and again in A.D. 60, the city kept rebuilding and prospering.” http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/main.htm

“Laodicea was a center for the regional textile industry. The sheep that grazed in the nearby valleys produced a black wool that was exceptionally soft. The wool was bought and sold in the city's markets.” http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/main.htm

Laodicea had its own theater, (above). The city also had a stadium, gymnasium, etc. Gladiatorial games were held in the stadium. www.holylandphotos.org

“ Across the valley from Laodicea was the city of Hieropolis, which was located above the large white mineral deposits at the center of the photo. Since Hieropolis is much better preserved than Laodicea, a tour of its streets and buildings can help to show something of urban life in this area ” ( http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/Laodicea/Hieropolis.htm ) “For I bear him record, that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis” ( Col. 4:13 ) http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Re velation/Laodicea/Hieropolis.htm

“Across the valley from Laodicea is an enormous hot spring. The white mineral deposits from the spring are visible for miles across the valley. The town of Hieropolis was built near this spring.” Hierapolis, hot H2O; Colossae, cold; in the middle Laodicean...lukewarm H2O http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/main.htm

HIEROPOLIS - main street lined by a massive colonnade. Laodicea would have looked comparable! http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/main.htm

10 “The pavement on the main street of Hieropolis shows the ruts left by wheeled vehicles that passed this way in antiquity. The streets of Laodicea would also have been filled with traffic passing along the main routes of commerce in central Asia Minor.” http://www.luthersem.edu/ckoester/Revelation/main.htm

T HE T EXT “ And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, 'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. " R EVELATION 3:14,15

T HE T EXT “ So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' --and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. " R EVELATION 3:16,17

T HE T EXT “ I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. " R EVELATION 3:18

T HE T EXT “ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. " R EVELATION 3:19,20

T HE T EXT “ To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. " R EVELATION 3:21,22
