Chemistry and Matter What is chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes. What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space What is mass? Mass is a measurement that reflects the amount of matter in a substance

Chemistry and Matter What is the difference between weight and mass? Weight is a measure of the effect of the Earth’s gravitational pull on matter Is your weight the same at all locations? Is your mass the same at all locations?

The Scientific Method

The Basic Steps l State the problem l Form a hypothesis l Test the hypothesis l Draw conclusions

State the Problem l A problem cannot be solved if it is not identified. l Research should be done to understand the problem.

Form a Hypothesis l This is a possible solution to the problem. l An “educated” guess

Test the Hypothesis l Perform an experiment to determine if the hypothesis solves the problem or not. l Observations and data will be made and recorded.

Draw Conclusions l Based on the observations and data, conclusions are drawn. l Conclusions can be as simple as “yes” or “no”.

Experimental Terms l Variable - factor being tested Independent: the variable that you plan to change (located on the x axis of a graph) Dependent: changes in response to a change in the independent variable (located on the y axis)

Experimental Terms l Control - part of the experiment without the variable (used as a comparison).
