Stuff You Need to Know - 1 1. Bathroom passes – If you need to ‘go’ – here’s how you do it: a.Passes are given AFTER the first 10 minutes and BEFORE the last 10 minutes of class. The “reusable” pass is on my podium, tucked beneath my roll book. b.You have a total of five (5) “free passes” to the bathroom per semester. c.The sixth and following bathroom trips will cost you 60 seconds of your break-time after class. d.Only those with medical excuses issued from the school are excluded from this policy. e.Emergency trips to the restroom inside the restricted times will also require 60 seconds after class. f.Restroom breaks in excess of 10 minutes are categorized as “ditching class” and a referral will be written up. 1 2

Stuff You Need to Know - 3 4.Vocabulary Details – a. If you miss a Monday, the vocabulary list may be obtained either by copying from a friend or from Mr. Martin’s master list. The lists are not posted online. b. Vocal lists are copied by hand, NOT photographed during class-time. c. Missed vocabulary tests must be made up within a week from the date of the missed test. Make-ups for missed vocab tests are Lunch B on Tues – Thurs or Tues – Thurs morning between 7:00- 7:40AM. After-school may be arranged. I do NOT give make-ups between classes or during the last 5-8 minutes of lunch. 24

Stuff You Need to Know - 4 5. Assignments Due – Far left side of white board contains due dates for upcoming assignments. It’s your responsibility to read it daily for changes. 6. Being Prepared – It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and what you need to have read/done. There are few excuses in our technological age for not being prepared. 7. Make-up Work – obtained on School Fusion page for this class (English 11 Martin, or English 23 Martin); under the heading “Web Pages,” click the “Classroom Assignments” link and you’ll see a page listing the work by date. You’ll be instructed where to go to attain any necessary materials. F 5

Stuff You Need to Know - 5 8. Work Expectations: Unreadable work will not be graded. The No-Name Basket is to be checked for missing work before asking me about it. Save copies of all typed assignments. Note-taking is not optional: it is expected. 3 5

Stuff You Need to Know - 6 9.Required Books – You will be given a schedule as to when certain books are to be brought to class. Neglecting to bring your assigned book could result in any or all of the following: a. You lose out on the “book points” I give. b.Your work will be docked points from whatever the day’s total score is. c.You may be issued alternative work and be disqualified from group work that day. 10. Submission guidelines – stored in notebook once issued. Free powerpoint template: www.brainybetty.com 7

Stuff You Need To Know - 7 11. Missed reading quizzes will be addressed as follows: a.The quiz retake window is two days after the quiz is administered (unless the material covered in the quiz is being addressed the same day in class). b.If you cannot take the quiz within the makeup window (or the material is covered that day in class), you will be required to come in and write in front of me a ½ -¾ page summary covering the material that the quiz covered. You may use the book to write this summary. c. This make-up must occur within one week of the missed quiz in order to obtain full credit. Make-up times are the same as Vocab test make-up times. Stuff You Need To Know - 8 12. Test “Re-Takes” – You have three (3) test/quiz “re-takes” available per semester. On any test/quiz in which I score less than a “C” (approx 70%) I may request a “re-take.” This must be done within one week of the date of the original test/quiz. a. For vocab tests, this means retaking the actual test. b. For reading quizzes, this may involve either a summary or substitution study questions. c. For notes tests, this may involve a summary of the notes, substitution study questions, or an actual retake of the original test. My new score (provided it’s higher than the original score by at least one letter grade) will be used to bring the original score up to a passing grade of “C.” Free powerpoint template: www.brainybetty.com 9

Stuff You Need to Know - 9 13. Sub Etiquette – a.Subs are to be given the same level as respect as I. b.Subs are instructed to let me know if anything happened that makes them not want to return to this class. c.Good reports result in more trust, easier “sub days.” Bad reports result in less trust, harder “sub days,” and individual conversations with offending parties that sub identifies. d.Subs are generally given extra work in case the class is not doing what it needs to do. Stuff You Need to Know - 10 Things You Have Control Over: 1.Your free time (lunch, before/after school, etc) 2.Your class attendance 3.Your ability to ask for help 4.Your preparedness for class Your grade is largely a result of how you manage these four areas of your life. Here’s the Obvious: You are responsible for your grade. You earn it each day you are here and each day you engage and perform. Each day you miss and each day you don’t engage is a day where your chance of passing this class and learning something of value is reduced. Free powerpoint template: www.brainybetty.com 12
