Background of sex education in Lubbock What is taught in Lubbock Schools? How do the students feel? How do the parents feel? How does Lubbock compare with the rest of the nation in pregnancies? STDs?

What is taught in Lubbock schools Abstinence is the key point in all sex education in Lubbock. Students may be told about protective measures, but are not told how to use them or what they do.

How do the student/parents feel “The current policies are obviously ineffective.” Corey Nicholes, Mayor of the Lubbock Youth Commission, age 17. “…when you look at the numbers, you see the abstinence curriculum fails.” “I got my sex ed from 3 sources – my peers, the media, and my own research,” Benson, 19. “I knew this many people where having sex, but I didn’t know so many were getting sick and pregnant,” Buchanan, 17. “Lubbock is in need of sex education.” “I don’t think teaching anything other then abstinence is right,” Cindy Wright, mother of two. “Sex outside marriage is Russian roulette,” Ainsworth, youth Pastor in Lubbock. “Abstinence is the 100 percent effective way of not getting an STD or pregnant,” said Vilka Scott, a disease intervention special at the Lubbock Health Department. “I strongly encourage abstinence.”

How does Lubbock compare with the rest of the nation in pregnancies? Lubbock leads Texas and the majority of the US in teen pregnancies In 4 years it dropped by rate of.6.

How does Lubbock compare with the rest of the nation in STDs? In cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea rates have fallen nationally Lubbock county has double the rates of the US. The highest rates being in the age range of 15 to 20 years old.

So what needs to happen to change this?

We propose a push for more in depth sex education The students obviously feel a lack of knowledge. Also the numbers show a need for change as well.
