1
Electrical components in everyday Transport The environmental impacts that effect the cost of electrical products By David Howarth
2
Where are they used? Electrical components are found in more places than people think. They are in a range of devices from: Motor bikes Aeroplanes and Cruise Liners
3
My presentation I am going to focus on the microchips in cars, more specifically... The ones found in TOM TOM Satellite navigation systems.
4
Why are these devices so expensive? The materials used to manufacture them Plastics Silicon PCB’s Add to the cost
5
Manufacturing Issues It takes time to produce Silicon microchips. Silicon dioxide has to be refined. 7 long processes are needed to turn silicon dioxide into a finished microchip. These consist of mining silicon dioxide, silicon conversion, wafer fabrication, final cleaning, etching, layering, ion implantation.
6
Environmental Impacts As environmental issues get more and more serious the cost of producing high-complex- material-based items increases greatly. As governments introduce changes and fines for the disposing of hazardous and non- biodegradable materials, companies are researching ways to keep their own costs down which inversely effects the retail price (prices increase).
