C.A.M Computer Aided Design Literacy Focused Task

LESSON OBJECTIVES Develop your understanding of Computer Aided Manufacture. Develop your Oracy and Literacy skills. Key Skills CommunicationProblem Solving

CAM Theory What Does C.A.M stand for? Examples of C.A.M machines? C omputer A ided Manufacture 2D Printing C.A.M is the manufacture of products using a computer machinery, rather than using traditional hand or power tools. 3D Modelling

What are the advantages of C.A.M 1.Accurate. 2.Quicker. 3.Can make exact copies. 4.Can run for 24 hour, 7 days a week. 5.Less time. 6.Problems can be solved making a rapid prototype to avoid any expensive mistakes before production. 7.Products can be viewed from all angles, and the size of parts can be worked out in relation to other parts. 8.Easily shared. B

Computer Numerical Controlled (C.N.C) What is C.N.C? Advantages Disadvantages

Virtual Modelling and Testing What is Virtual Modelling and Testing Advantages Disadvantages

Laser Cutting What is Virtual Modelling and Testing Advantages Disadvantages

Laser Cutting Virtual Modelling and Testing Advantages Disadvantages Rapid Proto typing C.N.C What are they? Images of the machines and things made from each

What are the Disadvantages of C.A.M 1.Very Expensive to set up and maintain. 2.CAM programs are often difficult to set and can take a long time to learn. 3.Require a specially trained operator. 4.Computer viruses, corrupt files, and power cuts can often lead to loss of work..

Shared Reading In this text you will further develop your understanding of CAD, you will also develop an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of this technology. Traditional Engineering drawing Relatively Production Prototypes Scales Components Relation Tricky words or Key Words Summary of Text

Shared Reading Task 1. – Before completing the shared reading task read through the information on the board and practice any words you may find difficult.. Task Rules Read the information given to you by your teacher in silence for 1 minute.

Shared Reading Short Extract Computer-Aided Design involves designing products on a computer, rather than the traditional methods on paper. Software ranges from 2D engineering drawing programs in 3D frame and solid modelling. CAD allows designers to model and compare designs cheaply and relatively easily. Also, many problems can be ironed out before the production of prototypes. In 3D programs, finished products can be viewed from all angles, and scales of components can be worked out in relation to each other.

Shared Reading Golden Rules Your Teacher will lead the task. No voice louder or faster than the teacher’s. No silly voices

Review What type of text was the shared reading? Fact Instruction Argument Persuasion In pairs discuss the text, In your discussion make sure you: Explain what C.A.D is Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of C.A.D. Oracy Task -Discussion

Speaking Frame – Summing Up Computer aided design or as it is abbreviated as C.A.D is, ……………. C.A.D known as………. Is,…………………………………. Overall, the advantages of …………………., the disadvantages are ………………………………..

Task 2 - Literacy 1.Using the new information gained, read carefully through the resource sheet in silence. 2.Answer the questions on the sheet provided. Remember Answer all question with a full sentences. Capital letters to start each sentence. Full stops.

Plenary What does CAD stand for? Describe what is CAD? Give two examples of CAD programmes? How can C.A.D be used to suit the customers needs? What are the advantages of CAD? What are the disadvantages of CAD?

Plenary - Bingo In the note section of your planner list down 3 key words from the table below. Brief Specification Softwood Function CAD Construction Google Sketch Up Tenon Saw CAMEconomics HardwoodNon Ferrous FerrousResearchProto type SustainableSet SquareCADAesthetics Smart Material
