6  Lightning is produced in thunderstorms when liquid and ice particles above the freezing level collide, and build up large electrical fields in the clouds.  The lightning spark can occur between clouds, between the cloud and air, or between the cloud and ground.  During a lightning storm, the safest place to be is in your home. 5  Lightning

7 FLOODS  A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land.  It is usually due to the volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake. HURRICANES  A Hurricane is any wind of the strongest level.  In the United States of America, Hurricane is the name assigned specifically to a tropical cyclone near the Atlantic and East Pacific basins. 6

8 SNOW STORMS  A winter storm is an event in which the main varieties of precipitation are forms that only occur at cold temperatures such as snow or sleet  Snowstorms are storms where large amounts of snow fall TORNADOES  A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus (or, in rare cases, cumulus) cloud base and the surface of the earth.  Tornadoes can come in many sizes. 7
