S3 into S4 Options PowerPoint for Use by Tutors and Students 2016/17 DLV 2015

Top Points.  You will have to pick an English (or literacy) course and a Mathematics (or numeracy) course.  You will then get to pick four other subjects.  Your teachers will tell you on your report what level you will get to do if you pick that subject in their recommendation.  You must get the form back by 1st March.

The options form is split in to different sections. Each part needs you to think carefully and must be filled in as shown. Section 1: Your Report Recommendations Section 2: Career Plans Section 3: Pathways through S4, S5, S6.  Choices for S4  Plans for S5 & S6  Signing off

 You will be given a practice option form. It is a yellow coloured document that looks a lot like your real options form.  There may be differences between the practice form and the real one so you have been warned.  The next few slides will talk you through the practice form and prepare you for the real one.

S3 Subjects/Courses S4 Level of Study Recommended by S3 Class Teacher Art & Design Drama Music Expressive Arts Theme Mathematics Tracks to the Future Biology The first section will ask you to complete a table. You must use your report card and fill in the table with your recommendations. The table looks a little like this. (but bigger) Step One: Read your report and for each subject enter the recommendation level This might be like Maths N4 Or Biology N5 See the form for help

 Once you have added all your recommendations from your report you are ready to move on.  Remember that some themes and courses may give you more than one recommended option. 8  Your Tutor and the Skills Development Worker have directed you to the My Word of Work Website.  Last year you did the My Strengths Profile and this year you are interested in option choices.  You can use this at home to find out more.

When do I want to leave school? Do I want to go to college What about University? Modern Apprenticeships S4 S5 S6  There will be lots of thoughts going around your head at the moment and sometimes this can be a little stressful.  We understand that you may not know for sure when you want to leave school or what job you would like.  We just want to know your thoughts at this point. We understand you might change your mind in the future.  This time next year we will review your pathway again.

Future Career Plans (if known) (Include details of any plans for work, Further Education (College) or Higher Education (University)) I plan to leave school at the end of S4 S5 S6 (circle)  In this part you have two jobs to do.  The first is to say what your plans are. Do you want to go to college or university: If so, what do you want to study? You fill in the fist bit with this info.  Secondly, you then circle when you wish to leave school. (NB: you can change your mind in the future) Hair and Beauty at Dumfries College.

Options for S4.  Now, taking account of your plans above and the qualifications you require, plan your pathway through S4, S5 and S6 to your planned exit point.  In S4 you must choose English and Mathematics and FOUR further courses, one from each of columns 2, 3, 4, and 5 in the table on page 2.  You also pick one reserve subject which can be chosen from any of the columns 2, 3, 4 or 5.

When you make your real subject choices each subject requested must be signed off by:  - if it is a subject you are currently studying your current class teacher for that Subject or Theme  - if it is a subject you do not currently study: the Principal Teacher Curriculum for that subject  - if it is a College Course: your Principal Teacher Pupil Support

 This is a tricky bit to do.  If you plan to stay on into S5 or S6 please indicate in the table the choices (subject and level) you would intend to make.  (These choices for S5 and S6 are purely to identify your current plans for pathways through to your planned destination after school. You will be able to review and change these plans each year).  If you are sure you are going to leave at the end of S4 you do not have to complete this part.

Subjects I plan to study in S5 (subject and level) (Choose 5 Subjects) Subjects I plan to study in S6 (subject and level) (Choose at least 4 Subjects) Here is an example to help you. “In S5 I hope to take some of my subjects to the next level. English & History form N4 to N5 and some others to Higher. “ So I put that in here like this. Here is an example to help you. “In S5 I hope to take some of my subjects to the next level. 17  The last section is perhaps the easiest.  There is an information evening and a parents night that will help you and your parents understand the process.  You need to sign & date the document yourself.  Your parent / carer needs to sign it to.  When it this is done it will be handed into your Tutor and then onto a PT(Pupil Support) who will check it. If all is well they will sign it and had it into the school.  The PT(PS) may wish to interview you and your parents / carers. If so, bring your form to the meeting so that the advice section can be completed.

 The deadline for the completed options forms is now 1 st March. Give it to your tutor who will pass it on.  Once all the forms are in, classes will be created. This means that some classes may be over subscribed or not run due to lack of interest.  If this effects you the school will inform you and your parents. Good Luck! Mr. Le Vin
