Discussion 7.1 (143) Discuss the ideas of adult learning and adult education and the implication of the differences? Each subfield engaged in adult learning has it own philosophical foundations regarding the role of education in society and the desired outcomes for educational activities for adults.
4
Andragogy is… An enhanced conceptual framework to more systematically apply andragogy across multiple domains of adult learning practice. There are three domains of adult learning: 1. Goals and purposes for learning 2. Individual and situational uniqueness 3. Andragogy: Core adult learning principles
5
Discussion 7.2 (144) Do you see andragogy’s focus on the learning transaction versus the goals and content of adult learning as a strength or a weakness? That andragogy does not speak to all possible goals and purposes of learning is not a weakness but a strength because andragogy can then transcend arenas of application.
6
Goals and purposes for learning: 1. Individual – The goal of education may be personal transformation. 2. Institutional – The goal of education may be human resource development for the ultimate goal of institutional growth. 3. Societal – The goal of education may be social transformation. Andragogy is easily applicable to each scenario because it focuses on the learning transaction, as opposed to the overall goal for which the program is offered.
7
Goals and purposes for learning Individual and situational uniqueness: 1. Subject matter differences 2. Situational differences 3. Individual differences

Goals and purposes for learning Individual and situational uniqueness Core Adult Learning Principles 1. Learners Need to Know – why, what, how 2. Self-Concept of Learner – self-directed 3.
