2 Definition  Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level. The usual way to join parallel structures is with the use of coordinating conjunctions such as "and" or "or."

3 Parallel Structure as Grammatically Correct  With the the gerund form of words:  Parallel: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and bicycling.  With infinitive phrases:  Parallel: Mary likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a bicycle. OR Mary likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.  Not Parallel: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and to ride a bicycle.

8 Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!   Henry uses antithesis in parallel structure in an exclamatory sentence to show that liberty is   equally as valuable and desirable as death (metaphorically used to describe British rule) is   destructive and undesirable. By paralleling them in a balanced sentence, he is saying that the   outcome will be one or the other and there can be no compromise. He completes his motif here of   equating slavery (lack of freedom because of British rule) with death.
