Analyze and Conclude 7th grade science Malnory/Phillips Anna Middle School Stemscopes 2014

So far… We have discussed three different investigation styles: Comparative descriptive experimental

Then we learned… During these investigations, scientists: Collect data Record data

The data is then put into… tables graphs s charts

Then scientists can… Analyze the data and make conclusions.

Thinking (also known as processing information) * Scientists look for patterns or trends in data. *If there is a pattern, then there is an explanation for that pattern. *The scientists analyze the data and make conclusions based on that pattern. *The pattern or lack of a pattern, is evidence for the conclusion. *Conclusions made without evidence are merely speculation (guesses) and are not based on scientific method.

Let’s try it out… Scenario: Students prepared a salt water solution and added green food coloring to the salty water. The mass and volume for each sample of salty water and fresh water was measured and recorded. The data was collected as shown on the table below. (copy this table into your notes) LiquidMassvolume saltwater43.839.5 Fresh water40.240.6 (Source: Stemscopes 2014)

Then an eyedropper was used to put 20 drops of the saltwater down the side of the beaker containing the fresh water. Students recorded the following observation: When the green saltwater was added to the fresh water, it moved slowly down the side of the beaker. It went underneath the fresh water and did not mix right away. (Stemscopes) Analyze and Conclude Directions: Use the qualitative and quantitative data from the scenario to complete the investigative process.

1. Analyze the numerical data by using the density formula (Density = Mass / Volume) and communicate the results of the analysis. LiquidDensity=M/V Salt water Fresh water 1.11 43.8/39.5= 0.9940.2/40.6=

2. Based on the analyzed data what could be a reasonable explanation for the observed behavior of the green saltwater after it was added to the fresh water? Include evidence in your answer.____________________________________________________________________________ Since it went under the fresh water, the salt water must be heavier or more Dense. We did calculate that salt water’s density is 1.1 and fresh water’s Density is.99, so salt water is more dense.

3. Based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, what can you predict about surface water conditions where the Amazon River flows into the Atlantic Ocean? __________________________________ __________________________________ Rivers are fresh water and oceans are salt water. The Amazon water probably Goes above the more dense salt water of the Atlantic. So the surface water where The two meet is probably mostly fresh, not salty.
