Space, Time, and Place in the History Classroom How High is Colorado on Amendment 64? Kyle S, Moses B, William K. KEY QUESTIONS What is the current state of marijuana legislation in the United States? How do Colorado vote for Amendment 64? How have localities reacted to the passage of Amendment 64?. Possible Indicators for Counties Opposing/Favoring Amendment 64 National Conclusion: When looking at the map of current state laws nationwide, the majority of states do not allow any legal use of marijuana. More states allow medicinal use than recreational use, and many states have laws reducing the penalty for minor possession of marijuana. Two states, Washington and Colorado, have fully legalized the use of marijuana, both medically and legally. As the map to the left shows, the debate is just beginning. Even though most states currently do not allow marijuana, current polls taken throughout the nation show that 26 states favor the legalization, and 25 states oppose it. The topic is surely controversial among US citizens, and the road to nationwide legalization will be difficult. Conclusion of Colorado: If one was to look at the state wide voting results for amendment 64 they would believe the state overwhelmingly wants recreational marijuana. However after looking at the data, at the county level the state is divided. Out of 64 counties, 33 counties voted yes and 31 counties vote no. A closer look at the attribute data shows that this vote was tied to the age of voter and whether the county is more urban or rural. The Reaction of Proposition 64 in major cities of Colorado closely aligns with the voting results. Following the passage of Amendment 64, many local governments passed laws making it illegal to sell/ distribute marijuana within their community. Unlike like the county vote, when looking at the cities allowing of recreational stores, residents of Colorado are against the legalization. Analysis Calculated and graphed based on age and amount of farms. Thematically mapped the United States as well as the counties of Colorado. Acquired data of each city of Colorado and their reaction to Amendment 64. Reclassified and interpolated based on the data. Created by Ashley D. The Problem: The National Barbados Museum wanted to map data on the number of Bajans, who went to work on the Panama Canal during the early 1900s. After gathering data across the island, they came to us asking if it would be possible to transfer the data into map form that can be used in a upcoming exhibit. The Process: First, locations of the workers had to be translated into coordinate points and then we transferred them into a drawn map of Barbados. Then a kernel density map was made to show the densities of the workers across the island. The Results: We can conclude which parishes supplied the most workers to the Panama Canal and overall, which parts of the island had the highest density of workers. The Value: By mapping the data for this project, it can be concluded that historical data can be mapped relatively easily as long as you have a large portion of time set aside. Furthermore, this case study shows that libraries, museums, etc. can even map their own data to give a valuable visual. Most importantly, this shows Barbados’ Panama Canal data in a new way that is easier to understand. Original Panama Canal Data

Tips, Tricks, and Mistakes Give your students a few minutes (or half a class) to just play around with the map. This will save time in the long run. If possible, choose your technology wisely…Chromebooks, Ipads, Laptops Use plenty of screen grabs with your directions Take advantage of what is already out there-ESRI Resources, Mapping Our World, etc.
