Matter Matters Matter, matter everywhere, Except in a vacuum of course. Chemistry is the study of matter, Its changes and interactions! What is matter? Does matter, matter? What is matter? Does matter, matter?

Does Matter Matter? (S8P1 a-g)YWBAT: (S8P1 a-g)YWBAT: Distinguish between atoms and molecules; Distinguish between atoms and molecules; Describe the difference between pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures; Describe the difference between pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures; Describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasma; Describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasma; Distinguish between physical and chemical properties of matter; Distinguish between physical and chemical properties of matter; Distinguish between physical and chemical changes; Distinguish between physical and chemical changes; Recognize that there are more than 100 common elements and some have similar properties as shown on the Periodic Table;& Recognize that there are more than 100 common elements and some have similar properties as shown on the Periodic Table;& Identify and demonstrate the Law of conservation of Matter. Identify and demonstrate the Law of conservation of Matter.

MATTER IS THE STUFF AROUND YOU Matter is everything around you. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is everything around you. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

STATES OF MATTER There are five states or phases of matter. Solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, and Bose-Einstein condensates are all different states of matter. Elements and compounds can move from one phase to another phase when special physical forces (ie – temperature) are present. Generally, as the temperature rises, matter moves to a more active state. Click on the above link and read about the different states. Write a paragraph about each one. What causes matter to change from one form to another?

Basic Structure of Matter Matter is composed of atoms which make up elements which make up molecules and/or compounds. CLICK ON THE LINKS AND READ/CORNELL NOTES/TAKE QUIZZES!atoms elements Matter exists as elements, compounds, or mixtures. (READ LINKS AND SEE HANDOUTS) compounds mixtures

Physical Changes Phase describes a physical state of matter. The key word to notice is physical. Things only move from one phase to another by physical means. If energy is added (like increasing the temperature or increasing pressure) or if energy is taken away (like freezing something or decreasing pressure) you have created a physical change. Changing states of matter is about changing properties - densities, pressures, and temperatures. The basic chemical structure does not change. Can happen in any proportions. LOOK AT HANDOUT AND IDENTIFY WHICH ARE PHYSICAL CHANGES. Phase describes a physical state of matter. The key word to notice is physical. Things only move from one phase to another by physical means. 7 Chemical Changes Chemical changes happen on a molecular level. It involves some sort of change in the basic chemical structure. Energy is released or absorbed – never destroyed. An example is when acid is poured on something, and it dissolves. CLICK ON PICTURE AND READ ABOUT CHEMICAL CHANGES/CORNELL NOTES! Chemical changes happen on a molecular level. 8 Back to Physical Changes Remember that when a physical change occurs, some properties change, but the identity of the substance remains the same. Remember that when a physical change occurs, some properties change, but the identity of the substance remains the same. Mixtures Solutions Solutions
