Your unit (Pack, Troop, etc.) is a Popcorn Store... without a storefront. Stores buy at wholesale and sell at ______? Scouts are the salesmen on commission. What’s a popcorn store need? Atlanta Area Council gives you popcorn. Pay for it later. Up first, Show-N-Sell. P OPCORN !
10
What is Show-N-Sell? Sell in front of stores or organizations (church, school, etc.) Why do Show-N-Sells? Non-confrontational Community awareness Supplements Take- Order Some people will buy only if they see the product
11
Step 1 Setup Locations, Date and Time Enough for each den, patrol, etc. (twice?) Pack 123 Kernel Can we sell popcorn in front of your store? Sure Please do Our pleasure Of course No, sorry. + Other Stores + Chartered Org Certainly
12
Step 2a With Committee, decide how much & what flavors to order. (This might be hardest decision.) Pack 123 Kernel Let’s get $1000 (retail) worth of popcorn. Okay Pack Committee We can sell more than that! Oof, that’s too much. Use past sale info, budget, Scout goals, etc.
13

14
Step 2b Decide where to store popcorn. Garage or Basement Trailer watch for heat Storage watch for heat Chartered Org
15
Pack 123 Kernel Step 3 Order Show-N-Sell Popcorn Deadline is when? (this is so easy) $1000 of popcorn coming right up!
16
Step 4 Pickup ordered popcorn. Pickup date is when?
17
Step 5 Execute the Sell at your locations! Collect money $$$! Show-N-Deliver
18
Logistics & Issues of Show-N-Sell Popcorn 1.Ordering CASES, (boxes... not bags/tins) 1, 6, or 12 bags/tins per Case (more later) 2.Get a variety, but not every flavor. 3.Access to storage throughout sale period 4.You will not sell all popcorn. (more later) 5.Method for tracking popcorn/cash (next slide)
23
Show-N-Sell Tally Sheet 1.Check and Double Check EVERYTHING, both in and out. 2.Never take someone’s word. See it for yourself. Count yourself.
24
Best Practices for Show-N-Sell 1.Scouts should point to their favorite mid range price first (like grocery middle shelf) 2.Don’t have a tip jar Technically, not allowed Encourages lowest giving amount Apply donations to Military option 3.Don’t break open Microwave boxes Not labeled for individual sale Takes 20 sales of $1 to equal 1 sale of $20 4.In this order: Cash/Check Credit Card Donation “Have a good day”
25
Paypal: paypal.com 2.70% Square: squareup.com 2.4% Readers and Accounts are Free
26
Also, Trail’s End Take Order app will be take manual-entry credit cards.
27
What are your Questions?
28
What is Take Order? Door-to-door, friends, family, at work, etc. TAKE an ORDER for popcorn Deliver later. Makes the most money.
29
Step 1 Decide on... - Kick Off Date: Pack Mtg, Troop Mtg, Special Mtg, etc. - Unit Prizes / Awards (not from Trail’s End) Pack 123 Kernel Awards? Top Seller Prize Pack Committee Top Den/Patrol Prize Door Prizes Pie in Cubmaster’s Face Refund Dues Free Overnight Trip Local Business Freebies
30
Step 2 Have an Awesome Kickoff! Get kids excited!! - Hand out / explain popcorn forms - Door Prizes? - Demonstrate how to sell door-to-door - Explain flavors & costs (not in detail) - Explain rewards / incentives / unit awards - Tell them their goal. Pack 123 Kernel Are you ready to sell some popcorn!!?!! Yes!
31
Step 3 Scouts get to work selling. Have organized outings? Neighborhood “blitz” days. Collect money at point of sale (if possible) in this order: 1. Cash or Check, Credit Card 2. Pay Later (pros and cons)
32
Step 3 Note:Make checks out to parents. Put Scout’s name on checks. At end of sale, parents write one check to unit.
33
Step 3 Alternative: Show-N-Sell door to door, aka Show-N-Deliver
34
Step 4: Ordering Take Order... Collect money & orders At least 1 week before due Leave forms with Scouts Collect 1 check from parents. Why? Use a spreadsheet? Pack 123 Kernel
40
Step 5. Tabulate how much popcorn you need to order. a.# Sold Door-to-Door b. – left over from Show-N-Sell c.= Equals Total you need to order Door to Door = 40 Caramel Corn Leftover Show-n-Sell = - 10 Caramel Corn Need = 30 Caramel Bags
41
Pack 123 Kernel Step 6 Order Popcorn at Trail’s End Website Deadline is when? $10,000 (retail) Ordering (this is a little harder) $10,000 of popcorn coming right up!
42
Step 7 Pickup ordered popcorn. Pickup date is when?
43
Step 8: Give popcorn to Scouts to deliver - Usually on same day as pickup - Reason they keep their form for delivery
44
Step 9 Turn in Money, fill out Top Seller on-line form, order prizes by when? December ____? For extra commission.
45
What are your Questions?
46
If you receive a flat donation... Apply to Military Popcorn Either by individual scout or by unit Counts toward Trail’s End Prize Incentives “At no time are Units permitted to solicit contributions for Unit programs.” Violates “non-profit status”. Then anything < $30 is donation to unit
47
Remember, you’re a popcorn store. You’re selling popcorn at RETAIL cost. ($10) The Council bills you at WHOLESALE, 70%. ($7) You keep the difference. ($3) Rest goes to Council & Trail’s End Council cuts you a check for extra commission later in the year if you fulfill requirements.
48
Example... You order $3,000 (retail) for Show-n-Sell You order $7,000 (retail) for Take Order If sell all, $10,000 will be in unit’s bank account. In November, Council bills you at 70% of Retail. You’ll pay $7,000. The 30% that’s left is your profit: $3000
49
Extra 5%? Council will mail you a $500 check in January. 35% of $10,000 = $3,500... or... Extra 5% + 50% on growth? (example: unit sold $5,000 last year) 35% of $5,000 = $1,750 + 50% of $5,000 = $2,500 = $4,250
