Purpose of today’s meeting The primary purpose of today’s meeting is: to ensure comparability of standards across all Senior Secondary providers this will occur through moderation of samples from TASC (level 3) or student samples generously provided by teachers (level 2) Secondary purposes are: to start to plan for September’s Moderation tasks to meet and work with teachers from all sectors, to share resources and strategies and request PL A further purpose is: to provide an opportunity to collect information/concerns regarding courses/exams etc.
6
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) (Approximate timings) Explanation of protocol and norms of language (2 mins) Explanation of task to be assessed (3 mins) Part 1: o Individual Assessment (15-20 mins) o Small Group Consensus (5-10 mins) o Whole group Consensus (5-10 mins) Part 2: o Calibration – reveal and discuss (5-10 mins) o Calibration – assessment (15 mins) o Discussion of second assessment and sharing of other samples (5 mins)
7
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Norms for respectful language o Please consider that a student has created the work to the best of their ability o Please consider that a teacher has assessed the work to the best of their ability o Please use respectful language at all times o Please refer to the evidence in the work – rather than the student themselves “I can find evidence in this work of …” Not “This student couldn’t even … “ o Please refer to the evidence in the assessment – and not the marker/assessor “I believe there is evidence here that the student achieved …” Not “the marker should never have given a … “
8
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Explanation of Task (3 mins) The CTL for (subject), (CTL name) in consultation with teachers has chosen criterion ( ) for this moderation activity because …. The task to be moderated is … You have 15-20 mins to … You must try to work individually on this section – as you will have a chance to discuss results in the next part (Small Group Consensus).
9
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Part 1 – individual assessment (15-20 mins): o Please give teachers up to 20 mins to complete the initial assessment task o After 15-20 mins please stop the activity and ask teachers to report their initial feeling about a grade using the standards document. You may record this in the report as for example o “2xB-, 3xC+, 7xC, 2xC-)” o Please do not record individual teacher names against grades o A summary (as above) is preferred to a full list (particularly as some groups will be very large!)
10
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Part 1 – Small Group Consensus (5-10 mins) o Please split into small groups of 2 or 3 o Where possible – please work with someone from a different provider o Share your assessments and try to come to consensus o Make sure you share evidence in the work against the standards document o Where there is disagreement – refer back to the standards document and refer to specific evidence in the work It is important even in small groups that this step is not skipped so that all teachers have the opportunity to say what they arrived at and specifically – why; and is particularly important in large groups
11
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Part 1 – Whole Group Consensus (5-10 mins) o As a whole group – please share the results of your small group discussions and try to come to consensus as a group o Where there are disagreements – please refer back to the standards document and refer to specific evidence in the work o It is important for state-wide moderation that you record in the report not only the grade that you assessed the work at – but state the specific evidence you found in the work that matched that standard o E.g. “Sample A contained … which provided evidence for … standard in the document”
12
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Part 2 – Calibration – Reveal and Discuss (5-10 mins) o The facilitator will now reveal the marker/teacher assessment o (Please remember the norms – if you disagree please refer to the evidence – not the individuals) o If the group consensus is different – please record whether you believe the group should stick with their assessment – or whether as a group you are changing your interpretation of the evidence/standards to match the marker/teacher o If you agree - simply record that you agree
13
Moderation of Work Samples (75 mins) Part 2 – Calibration – Assessment (15 mins) o The facilitator will now provide you with a second piece of work to assess o Please use your (new) group understanding to apply to the standards to this piece of work individually o Then please share whether you have consensus as a group as to the rating for this new piece o It is very important for purposes of state-wide moderation that as a group you record not only the grade – but also the evidence you found
14
Initial Planning for September Moderation (15 mins) Please try to contact the other regional meeting either by: o Using Lync, by Phone or via email Please try to confirm each other’s consensus results Please try to agree to either: o A common state-wide assessment (if this is not possible try for..) o A common regional assessment (if this is not possible try for..) o A provider to take responsibility for sharing student samples prior to September for assessment Please try to agree on: o The criterion/criteria to focus on for use in September o The type of task (e.g. common midyear exam, investigation, essay, etc.) o Who is responsible for the next step in creating/sharing the assessment task Please complete the initial planning document
15
Sharing Resources and Assessment Strategies (10 mins) Please share with the group any resources or assessment strategies you have brought.
16
Recording Course Information (10 mins) If you have any information, questions or issues that you would like to discuss with each other or to pass on to CTLs – please discuss them now and record them in the report If there is any specific PL you would like – please record them in the report
17
Summary and Wrap Up (5 mins) Goals for today were: o Individually assess a piece of work o Come to small group and then whole group consensus o To calibrate your interpretation of the standards (if necessary) given information from examiners/teacher assessments o To apply your whole group understanding to a new piece of work o To record all the evidence that you found in the work that matched the grading/assessment that you gave the piece of work Also to compare where possible with the other regional group what their assessments of the pieces were To start planning for September and assign responsibility for next steps To share resources, meet teachers and discuss and record issues
18
