Theodore Roosevelt ● Big Stick Diplomacy ● - An outgrowth of “Gunboat Diplomacy” ● - Negotiate peacefully but with constant threat of military force ● Securing Panama Canal rights ● Great White Fleet- 16 new warships (showed U.S. strength) ● Helped negotiate treaty ending Russo-Japanese war

Roosevelt Corollary ● An addition to the Monroe Doctrine ● U.S. has “police power” in Western hemisphere ● - Put an end to revolution and corruption in other nations ● U.S. Will support pre-existing European interests on their behalf ● - Europe keeps military out of our hemisphere ● Ex. U.S. Collects 32 million on behalf of Europe from the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo)

William Taft ● Dollar Diplomacy ● - The U.S. Should intervene in foreign nations mainly to protect it's economic interests ● - Use loans from U.S. to control foreign states ● - Encourage people and companies to invest abroad (help U.S. and keep out other nations) ● Supported a U.S.- friendly revolution in Nicaragua ● Tried to take economic control of Honduras by buying up their debt

Woodrow Wilson ● Moral Diplomacy ● - U.S. has an obligation to encourage/protect democracy and freedom ● - U.S. Will only deal with and support countries with similar moral beliefs ● - Opposed imperialism ● Intervened in many Latin American nations ● - Including Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Mexico
