THE ATMOSPHERE This may go “over your head”
3
COMPOSITION Nitrogen: Source Oxygen: Source Other: Source Aerosols: types of tiny, solid particles, or atmospheric dust
4
AIR PRESSURE The atmosphere is pulled to earth by gravity This makes the air denser at Earth’s surface Because gravity pulls air downwards the amount of air at higher levels is less, making it harder to breath
6
LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE Troposphere: Ozone: Stratosphere Mesosphere: Thermosphere:
9
ENERGY IN THE ATMOSPHERE Radiation: Conduction: Radiation: *remember heat rises*
10
WARMING OF THE ATMOSPHERE Earth absorbs about 2/billionths of the energy from the sun. The rest is reflected by the Atmosphere Clouds Gases Earth’s surface Surfaces of the Earth absorb heat from the sun, but not constantly These surfaces give heat back to the atmosphere
12
GREENHOUSE EFFECT The gases in earth’s atmosphere act like a layer a glass trapping in the energy from the sun The gases in our atmosphere that trap the energy are called greenhouse gases The process of greenhouse gases trapping and rereleasing this energy is called the greenhouse effect Naturally these gases do not exist in high enough amounts to cause issues, but natural and industrial sources increase the amount of these gases
