Creative Computing

We will be using the PROBLEM BASED LEARNING approach to learn computing and a lot of other things There will be no “sage on the stage”, that is, a teacher, who will tell all and is supposed to know all. You will nevertheless have a “guide by the side” to facilitate your learning.

What are we going to do today? Form teams Create an interactive computer application

Tell me and I will forget Show me and I will remember Involve me and I will understand Step back and I will act ( Chinese proverb)

Performance at present level: Familiar routine CHANGE 1. Shock Discomfort, frustration and confusion because usual norms are gone 2. Denial Trying to cope by denying and hoping that the teacher will return to giving instructions. 3. Strong emotion Disorientation, anxiety, anger, negative self-talk 4. Resistance and withdrawal Preference to be alone; “I think I will skip tomorrow’s class”

What do we have in the problem? There is a rectangle There are 5 buttons There is a window containing all these Width and height Line color and fill color Line width Four buttons for moving up, down, left and right One button to close the window and exit the program Buttons have labels on them. Our Problem

What are things we need to find out? How to make a window appear? How to include a rectangle and five buttons into that window? How to make the rectangle to look like the way we want it? How to put labels on the buttons? How to make something happen when a button is pressed? What are the things that keep the rectangle in its place?

Performance at present level: Familiar routine CHANGE 1. Shock 2. Denial 3. Strong emotion 4. Resistance and withdrawal 5. Acceptance Have a leap of faith that the new approach will work 6. Struggle Reaffirmation of new reality; exploration of new opportunity; focus on defining the problem 7. Sense of direction Relaxes and accepts change without fully resolving it; “what will I do now?” 8. Integration Satisfaction with change; willingness to share

What are the changes we experienced? Role of teacher changed. Teacher did not start with a title of a topic to learn today. A problem was presented instead. Teacher did not start with a title of a topic to learn today. A problem was presented instead. Teacher did not give exact instructions. Students were asked to tackle the problem. Teacher did not give exact instructions. Students were asked to tackle the problem. Teacher only facilitated the learning process. Teacher only facilitated the learning process. Role of student changed. Students had to study the problem by themselves. Students had to study the problem by themselves. Students had to find out what they need to learn. Students had to find out what they need to learn. Students had a lot of free choices. Students had a lot of free choices.

What else did we learn today? Knowledge applies to situations. Knowledge can be gathered when a need has been identified. Needs can be identified by looking into conditions specific to a problem and choosing the pertinent aspects. Stress usually accompanies change. Change can trigger stress. Stress can lead to negative thoughts and debilitate a person. Stress and anger can be managed. We can learn to do interesting and useful things without going to a classroom and listening to instructions.

The End.
