WHAT IS SAT? The SAT is a college entrance test required by most four-year colleges and universities. The assessment is one source of data to predict student success in college.

Who Takes The SAT? Most college bound students take the SAT for the first time during their junior year of high school. Students may also test during their senior year. There is no limit on the number of times that a student can test.

Who Will Take The New SAT? The class of 2017 (current sophomore class) will be the first class required to take the new SAT as juniors.

SAT Facts 1.6 million students take the SAT every year Today, some type of post-secondary education is required well-paying jobs In 2013, 57% of the students who took the SAT lacked college readiness skills

Scoring Current SAT Revised SAT Total score is 2400 800 for Math 800 for Reading Comp. 800 for Writing Points taken off for incorrect answers Total score is 1600 800 for Math 800 for Evidence Based Reading & Writing Option Essay will receive a separate score No points taken off for incorrect answers

Timing/Administration Current SAT Revised SAT 3 hours and 45 minutes Available in print 3 hours 50 minutes for optional essay Available digitally & in print

Componets Current SAT Revised SAT Mathematics Critical Reading Writing - Required Mathematics Evidence-Based Reading & Writing Reading Test Writing & Language Test Essay (optional)

Essay Current SAT Revised SAT Essay required; given at beginning of SAT 25 minutes to complete essay Students take a position on a presented topic; tests writing skills Essay optional; given at end of SAT 50 minutes to complete essay Students produce a written analysis of a provided source text; tests reading, analysis and writing skills

Math Old SAT – Not representative of current HS level work. New SAT - Aligned to the Common Core State Standards Fewer math concepts, deeper questions More rigor Require reading comprehension and critical thinking

Reading & Writing Current SAT Revised SAT Score combines essay & multiple choice Question types: sentence completion and passage-based questions Reading & Writing will be combined into “Evidence-based Reading & Writing” Essay will receive a separate score No sentence completion Emphasis on analyzing literature

Reading & Writing continued Current SAT Revised SAT Students are not asked to site evidence Vocabulary in limited context General reasoning skills Passages from Social Studies & Science Primary source passages i.e. The Gettysburg Address Vocabulary in extended context
