Things to Keep In Mind Attendance Policy – 8 absences and you may not get credit for the class, 4 tardies equals 1 absence Struggling academically? – remember that attendance, doing homework, and class participation will bring grades up! Also, seek out your teacher for tutoring. The counseling department also has a list of tutors for hire. Volunteer work / community service is rewarding and can look good on college applications Find an extra-curricular activity or sport you can be involved in. Use your summer wisely – senior year can be expensive – start saving money for college applications, graduation fees, etc. Also do research on colleges and scholarships (before Senior and Junior year)!

6. Let’s Plan Your Future! Junior year – you will be taking the ACT in the spring. Also you will want to take the SAT after completing Math II. Senior Year – you will want to take the SAT or ACT again in the summer or fall if you are not happy with your scores. English III / AP English Language Math – Math III / H. Math III / Pre-Calculus (if A or B in H. Math III) / AP Stats (if A or B in H. Math III) Science – Physics / Chemistry / H. Chemistry / H. Physics with AP Physics / AP Biology) Social Studies – American History I / H. American History I / AP US History Career Clusters (need to be taking a level two class) Foreign Language is not a graduation requirement, but is a requirement for most 4 year colleges

Let’s Talk Classes – Rising Seniors If you are making A’s in your classes, consider taking more challenging courses next year (Honors and AP) If you plan to attend college, it is important your take a full senior schedule with the most difficult courses you can handle – colleges don’t like flexes or graduating early. Seniors – you may only have two flexes during the year All seniors (and underclassmen) need 4 social studies to graduate. Most will take American History I and II, but if you took the Junior pairing, and are not planning on taking the senior pairing, you will need to make sure you have another social studies credit. Typical AP Courses for Seniors: AP English Literature/AP European History, AP Spanish, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP US Government, AP Art, AP Music Theory Career Clusters – counselors will be making sure that you are taking classes to complete a career cluster, but talk to your counselor if worried.

11. Filling Out Your Registration Sheets This presentation will be available on our website for you to review. If you are registering for an Honors or AP class and do not meet the prerequisites, you will need to ask for an academic waiver from your counselor. Before you return this waiver, you will not be registered for the class. If you are interested in an NCVPS class – go to ncvps.org to look at options. If you are interested in taking a college class through CCP, see your counselor for an application and to see if you meet the pre-reqs (must be a junior or senior, have a 3.0 GPA, and have certain test scores) If you want to register for an application class (high level theatre, art, and chorus classes, office assistant or peer helper) please fill in an alternate, then once you turn in your application and are accepted, we will change it. Make sure you write on your registration sheet which class you would like to drop if you get into the application class.

Registration Timeline February 23, 2015: Hand out Registration Sheets February 27, 2015: Registration Sheets due back to Counselors Month of March: Counselors meet with each student to go over class choices. Will be calling students from class all month Early June: Students will receive schedules for 2015- 2016 June 30, 2015: All schedule change requests for first semester MUST be submitted through google document (more information will be given about this later)
