Earthquakes The Basics Learning intentions: To understand what causes earthquakes to happen and why earthquakes cause the damage they do.
2
Some interesting sites: Animation tracking global earthquakes in early 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3jHUGHOlhA Go here to look at recent quakes in New Zealand: http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/felt
3
Plate Types and Plate Convergence Two plate types: Oceanic and Continental When they come together, the general idea is that one is a subduction plate. That plate gives way/goes under the other plate as they converge.
4
Plate Divergence When plates diverge it commonly leaves a rift valley (space between the plates) but is then filled with magma from the asthenosphere.
5
Risk of Earthquakes Remind you of anything?
6
Terms Epicenter – the exact location on the Earth’s surface under which the “explosion” occurs Focus – the actual location under the Earth’s surface where the fault ruptures Magnitude – the overall intensity of the earthquake – measured on the Richter scale Seismic Waves – the “shockwaves” sent out when earthquakes occur
