An Introduction to Web Quests for Language Teachers Andrianna Jobin

Background: What is a Web Quest? Bernie Dodge, San Diego State University “An inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. Web Quests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.”

Why use Web Quests?  Motivating and fun  Appeal to multiple intelligences with multi-media various tasks in tasked-based approach  Language is more authentic and up-to-date  Fosters learner independence  Integrative-skills approach, as in real-life projects and communications

Anatomy  Introduction  Task  Process  Evaluation  Conclusion  Teacher's page Image from http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/staffdev/buildingblocks/p- index.htm

Example  Idea: Travel Plan  Task: Design an itinerary while working within realistic constraints.  Communicate knowledge about a particular place or set of places; discuss budgeting of time and money; agree on solution that balances several competing possibilities.  Examples: Canada: A Family Vacation Canada: A Family Vacation http://www.cesa8.k12.wi.us/teares/it/webquests/canada/index.html The Trip The Trip http://www.elko.k12.nv.us/elkohigh/webexam.html Exploring Oregon Exploring Oregon http://www.thedalles.k12.or.us/staff/dh/lhughitt/webquests/exploring_oregon.htm

Introduction  Intended for students  What is the activity or lesson about?  Set the stage for any role or scenario  Prepare and hook the reader‘s attention  What is the guiding question or mission?

Task Section  In general, what are they going to do?  What will the end result be? I.e., a problem to be solved a product to be designed a summary to be created, etc.  How will learners be required to process and transform the information they've gathered?  NOT the actual steps of the WebQuest – that comes next in the....

Process Section  What will the learners go through to accomplish the task?  What resources will the learners use?  Will there be different roles/groups? If so, what will they be?  How should learners gather, analyse, and organise the information?

Evaluation Section  How will you evaluate the learners' perfomance?  Will the evaluation be for individuals, groups, or both?  Include an assessment rubric which aligns with the final product and tasks.

Conclusion  Bring closure  Encourage reflection  Summarise accomplishments  Extra questions or links to encourage students to continue thinking beyond this lesson

Teacher’s Page  What is the lesson? How did it come about?  Learner characteristics What ages, levels, and subjects is this geared for? What ages, levels, and subjects is this geared for? What do students need to know before doing this? What do students need to know before doing this?  Curricular standards & Evaluation criteria  Lesson Organization and Logistics How many classes, days, &/or weeks will it take? How many classes, days, &/or weeks will it take? Is it interdisciplinary? Is it interdisciplinary? Guidelines for groupwork.Guidelines for groupwork. What skills are needed? Any common misconceptions? What skills are needed? Any common misconceptions?  If students are divided into groups, provide guidelines on how you might do that.  Resources needed

Research  Short term vs. Longer term Web Quests See http://webquest.sdsu.edu/about_webquests.html See http://webquest.sdsu.edu/about_webquests.htmlhttp://webquest.sdsu.edu/about_webquests.html  Integrating skills through project based learing See Clarke, J.
