Child Abuse Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional maltreatment, or neglect of a child or children. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, and sexual abuse.”

Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse is defined as the production of psychological and social deficits in the growth of a child as a result of others behavior towards the child. Examples: Yelling Coarse and rude attitude Inattention Harsh criticism Name-calling Ridicule Degradation

Emotional Abuse Destruction of personal belongings Torture or killing of a pet Excessive criticism Inappropriate or excessive demand Withholding communication Routine labeling or humiliation.

Physical Abuse Physical contact that causes pain, injury, bodily harm or other physical suffering

Sexual Abuse “Child sexual abuse is a form of child abuse in which an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation. Sexual abuse refers to the participation of a child in a sexual act aimed toward the physical gratification or the financial profit of the person committing the act.

Sexual Abuse Sexual Abuse includes: Asking or pressuring a child to engage in sexual activities Indecent exposure Displaying pornography to a child Actual sexual contact with a child Physical contact with the child’s genitals Viewing of the child’s genitalia without physical contact Using a child to produce child pornography.”

Sexual Abuse Characteristics of a victim : Inappropriate interest or knowledge of sexual acts Bedwetting Nightmares Change in appetite Excessive aggression Fear of a particular person or family member

Physical Neglect

Child Neglect Child neglect is the failure of a parent or other person with responsibility for the child to provide needed food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or supervision to the degree that the child’s health, safety, and well- being are threatened with harm.” Neglect is also a lack of attention from the people surrounding a child
