10 The Shogun gets too Groovy  Despite leaps in progress, growth came at the cost of seclusion  Act of Seclusion (1636) - Japan is closed off from essentially all western countries  Christianity was pushed under the carpet for the entire length of the shogun’s rule after a nasty rebellion in 1637  Classism was very heavy during this period  Peasants could not stray from farm work

11 Significance -Japan kept up an impressive 250 years of peace as the heavenly like Floating World before crashing back down into reality (Gluck). -It set Japan up for the modern era (Gluck). -It remains as the last period of traditional Japan.

12 Downfall - Meiji Restoration  Economy began to fall as the agricultural aspect of the country began to lag behind other mercantile fields  Suspicions rose as the shogunate continued to reject western influence  Peasants began to uprise after famine started to spread  Lead to an uprising of the Anti-Tokugawa clans Choshu and Satsuma in 1867 (Boshin War)  Imperial Restoration: Shogunate is toppled and Emperor Meiji is restored as power  New regime opened country doors to the United States and other western countries  Budding flourishment from the shogunate allowed for rapid modernization
