QR CODES: What are they, and how can they be used in education? Created by Russell Smith Technology Facilitator North Edgecombe High School
2
What is a QR Code? A QR Code (otherwise known as a “Quick Response” code) is a matrix barcode that is designed to be read by smartphones. QR codes are 2-dimensional codes, and the information that is encoded into it can contain information such as a URL (internet web address), text, or other data.
3
Although one QR code looks similar to another QR code, each code is unique! (Much like snowflakes!) QR codes are designed to allow its contents to be decoded at high speeds. Here is the URL of an article detailing the ways in which QR codes can be used in education: http://thejournal.com/articles/2011/08/31/qr-codes- in-the-classroom.aspx

QR CODE GENERATOR WEBSITES There are several QR Code generation websites, but the one I find reliable is http://qrcode.kaywa.com/
5
This website allows to Generate QR codes containing Four types of information: URL Text Phone Number SMS
6
You can also select the size of QR code that will be generated, from small, medium, large, or extra-large.
7
Generating a QR Code For this example, I will create a QR code using the URL for the North Edgecombe High School website. Type (or copy and paste) the URL in this space
8
Generating a QR Code Choose the size of the QR code and click “Generate!” This is how your QR code will appear (or very similar) once it has been generated!
9
Placing Your QR Code You can place your QR code into a wiki or Moodle course by saving the image of the QR code......or by copying and pasting the embed code of the QR code into an HTML editor. Copy this embed code!
10
Placing Your QR Code using an embed code To embed your QR code into your Moodle site, choose the section where you want to place the QR code and choose “Compose a web page”.
11
Placing Your QR Code using an embed code On the following screen, in the section marked “Compose a Web page”, click on this icon that looks like two brackets. This will allow you to enter in HTML code.
12
Placing Your QR Code using an embed code Paste in the copied HTML code for the QR code that you generated. The HTML code will look like this in the text box. Save your changes after pasting in the HTML code.
13
Click on the link for your QR Code A separate browser window will appear, allowing you to view your embedded QR Code!
