2 Writers create mood through: SETTING DESCRIPTIONS – time and place IMAGERY – descriptions that appeal to the senses DIALOGUE – conversations between characters (pauses, quickness, etc.) Mood is the feeling or atmosphere the writer creates for the reader. How is MOOD created?

3 HOW CAN MOVIE ADS HOOK YOU AND CREATE A MOOD? What makes a movie ad striking? Colors? Slogans? Artwork? Images? Fonts? Hints? Titles? Sound? Turn and talk - Discuss how movies posters and trailers hook the reader/viewer.

4 HOW IMAGERY IS USED TO CREATE MOOD AND HOOK YOU! Movie posters are two-dimensional representations of the movie itself. However, skilled artists are paid BIG BUCKS to design posters which appeal to the public’s senses. Review the following posters and discuss the imagery used to create a specific mood. Remember to look at setting and imagery.

15 CREATE A MOVIE POSTER: EXPLORE IMAGERY Imagine that “The Monkey’s Paw” is to be made into a full-length movie. Brainstorm images, colors, and text you would use if you were in charge of creating the movie poster. You will design a poster that communicates the drama and excitement of “The Monkey’s Paw” without giving away the ending. Your poster must appeal to the senses (IMAGERY!) Use images from story and include a slogan. Use dramatic display type for the title.

16 MOVIE POSTER: EXPLORE IMAGERY Choose your font, slogan, images, and layout should be chosen carefully to promote the mood of the story. When you have finished your poster, write a paragraph explaining why the images, colors, font, and composition were chosen.
