Active/ Passive voice Voice: the form a transitive verb takes to indicate whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action

Active When the subject of a verb performs the action, the verb is in the active voice Verbs in the active voice take direct objects

Active Example A group of ecologists visited the Amazon rain forest. [the subject, group, performs the actions. Rain forest is the direct object]

Passive Voice When the subject receives the action, the verb is in the passive voice Verbs in the passive voice do not take a direct object

Passive example The Amazon rain forest was visited by a group of ecologists [The subject, rain forest, receives the action. There is no direct object]
