After World War 2: ● The old European powers no longer world leaders (GB, France, Germany) ● All countries war torn ● Only 2 great powers left: ● United States vs. Soviet Union ● US(democracy) vs. USSR(communism)

But... ● Both just fought the most costly war in human history ● Both wanted to avoid war – Nuclear weapons, war torn ● BUT neither side wanted to back down ● US wanted everyone to be Democratic/Capitalism ● Soviet Union wanted everyone to be communist

International Court of Justice ● Judicial Branch ● In the Netherlands ● 15 judges: hear disputes between nations ● Interpret International Law

Secretary-General ● Secretary-General: chief executive officer of UN ● Ban Ki Moon: Secretary General today

Economics and Social Council ● Promotes human rights and tries to make everyone's life better

Secretariat ● Carries out day to day issues ● Assists the other agencies

UN Agencies ● World Health Organization (WHO) ● United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)

International Monetary Fund (IMF) ● World Bank: give loans to developing countries at low interest rates
