College Librarian Panel Discussion: Information Literacy; Bridging from High School to College… Continuing the Conversation LEATHERSTOCKING CONFERENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE Colleen R. Kehoe-Robinson Associate Professor, Library Mohawk Valley Community College October 29, 2010

“References” and “Works Cited”: Building Blocks to a Successful Research Paper APA style, MLA style, Chicago Manual of Style, CSE…. Phrases that often cause apprehension and confusion for our students. Our mission: to demystify these citation styles and use them as building blocks to a successful research paper.

Citation Styles…Demystified The MVCC Academic Integrity Policy states that students cannot “engage in plagiarism by submitting or using as their own another person's oral, written or computer-based work. All sources of material must be credited”. Proper crediting of sources is done through the use of a citation style MLA, APA and Chicago Manual of Style are the most commonly used styles at MVCC These styles provide “formulas” for identifying each source used in the research paper

Citation Style “Formulas” Each type of source has a “formula” that includes all of the elements that need to be identified about that source so that a reader can locate it. The elements and their order may differ slightly between styles, but their purpose remains the same. The list of “References” or “Works Cited” identifies each source in full at the end of the paper, and each source is credited within the text of the paper as well. For example: A book by a single author is identified by the following elements in MLA Style: Author. Title. City of Publication. Publisher. Publication Date. Medium of Publication. The in-text citation would include the author’s name and page number of the reference.

Citation Style “Formulas” as Building Blocks… Exposes students to the variety of sources that are available Fosters an understanding of the suitability of resources in the research process For example: peer-reviewed article from a scholarly journal vs. an article from a popular magazine Encourages use of both primary and secondary sources

“Other Sources” The MVCC campus provides access to other types of sources too… Lectures that are offered as part of the Cultural Series Interviews with faculty experts in a wide variety of disciplines Original works of art on display in the gallery Performances that take place in the MVCC Theater Don Karecki, President of K&M Publishers, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cultural Series Lecture : “The U.S. Oil Industry: Fire In the Belly!”
