2 Directions Everyone needs something to write with. Number your paper as you go along. This test will receive a grade based on effort not your actual results. Everyone is expected to complete this.

4 deaf- a person with a hearing loss who uses English to communicate. Attends mainstream schools.

5 Deaf- A person who has a hearing loss, identifies with Deaf Culture and uses ASL to communicate. Attends a residential school for the deaf.

6 Info to give when you meet a Deaf person: Full Name Where you go to school. Who Taught you ASL. If you know any Deaf people.

7 Why would a Deaf person’s home look differently than a hearing person’s home? A deaf person’s home would look different because there would be a lot more lights. For: Seeing and as alarms.

8 Describe Closed Captioning. Texts that appears on the bottom of your TV screen. It is in real time. It can be turned off.

9 Describe Open Captioning. Like subtitles in a movie. They can not be turned off. They are pre-printed.

10 Who is Thomas Gallaudet and why is he important to Deaf history? A hearing man. He met Alice Cogswell and then went to Europe to find a way to teach the deaf. He brought back Clerc and together they started the first school for the deaf.

11 Who is Laurent Clerc and why is he important to Deaf history? A Deaf man from France. He taught Gallaudet French Sign Language. Together they started the first school for the deaf and began developing ASL.

12 American School for the Deaf in Hartford Connecticut The first school for the Deaf was in Hartford Connecticut. It was opened by Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc in 1817. It was inspired by Alice Cogswell.

13 What was the DPN protest at Gallaudet University in 1988 all about? The Deaf President Now protest was about students at Gallaudet University who wanted a Deaf president. They wanted a leader who could identify and communicate with them. Dr. I. King Jordan was the first Deaf president of GU!

14 What are the five methods of cross- cultural communication? 1.Pen & Paper 2.Adaptive Signing 3.Gesturing 4.Third Person Interpreter 5.Lip Reading

15 What does CODA stand for? Child Of Deaf Adults

16 How does weather affect Deaf people? Deaf people do most of their socializing face to face because the TTY is slow and it is not private. If the weather is bad, then they cannot drive to see friends and socialize.

17 Why do people who are Deaf always share their plans or where they have been? Throughout history deaf people have always had to rely on each other for information. There wasn’t always: –TTY’s –Captions –Blackberries –Etc…

18 What telecommunication device do the deaf use in place of a telephone? TTY Blackberry VRS

19 What advantages do hearing people have over deaf people when it comes to telecommunications? TTY is slow and the phone is fast. TTY uses operator, therefore isn’t completely private.

20 Why do Deaf people hang around after a show or play? To socialize.

21 Why do Deaf people wait to share personal information or information containing a lot of emotion until they are face to face rather than tell it over a TTY ? The operator, makes their conversation not private.

22 What is the ADA? American’s WITH Disabilities Act

23 What are the three educational options for deaf children? Mainstream –Public School –All Hearing Kids –Have an interpreter Oral School –All Deaf Kids –Learn to Lip Read and Talk Residential School For The Deaf –All Deaf Kids –Learn Deaf Culture and ASL –Kids sleep there, some may be day students.
