2 Framework for Success Ann Arbor offers a unique blend of community assets that make it a great place to live, work and play  Supported by arts, culture, natural resources, recreation and an airport  Small but growing base of innovative companies  Innovative companies are attracted to our key attributes Despite these community assets, we are currently struggling to provide jobs for our residents and maintain our lifestyle  1700 jobs lost in 2006 and 2007  $5 million in lost philanthropy  Stagnant tax base 1

3 Framework for Success We need a Long-term regional success plan to ensure:  Jobs for our residents  Tax base for community services  Funding to maintain and enhance arts, culture, recreation and human services 2

4 The Vision The Region’s vision is to be the place where world changing innovation happens! Growing innovation companies can result in significant public benefits: Increased job opportunities for our residents Increased demand for local company products and services Increased local wealth will enhance our arts, culture, recreation and human services 3

5 A Focus on Education Our leading education system is an asset to develop and retain highly skilled, knowledge ‐ based workers  Improve graduation rates  Early college program expansion  Connecting employers and talent (internships, mentorships)  Creative (arts and culture curriculum 4

6 A Focus on Quality of Place Infrastructure  Expanding transit throughout the region including increasing urban core routes and commuter rail in the region and to Detroit  Workforce housing in the urban core  Marketing what we already have (excellent recreation open space and cultural events) 5

7 A Focus on Talent Initiatives Talent initiatives have a significant impact on economic development  Developing talent by mentoring younger professionals  Retention through 3 rd Places and Young Professionals Network  Attraction by helping “trailing spouses”  Acceleration by developing a pool of C-level talent 6

8 A Focus on Business Acceleration Provide critical support for attracting and growing innovation business start-ups  Long-term funding for business incubators  Capital loans and grants  Marketing tools to increase success  Business Networks (connect start-ups with established businesses)  Cultural Ambassadors 7

9 Resources and Accountability Leadership Team  Public, private and non-profit Leadership Team to champion the Strategy and obtain resources Present to community, state, foundations etc. Solicit leadership and fiscal resources Gauge and report progress Success Metrics Success will be measured through growth in innovation jobs, unemployment rate as compared to the national average and progress toward development of important assets. 8

10 Resources and Accountability Business Plans for Action  Public, private and non-profit Champions for each action  Implementation Teams to develop specific action plans, timelines and to implement actions  Dedicated project managers to assist the Implementation Teams  Regular reports from teams will drive collaboration and community 9

11 Implementation & Accountability Starting this November:  Present to government, non-profit, education, and business groups to secure buy-in, leadership and resources for action  Present 2009 action plans and measurement to community in Feb 2009  Report progress at Sept 2009 Impact event, upcoming actions, and solicit leadership and resources 10
