9. Clinical Exam Rooms The PULSE Center has four clinical exam rooms that look just like a typical exam room found in any physician's office. However, PULSE exam rooms are also outfitted with one-way glass, pan/tilt video cameras and audio monitoring equipment to enable professors and trainers to evaluate students' interaction with standardized patients.standardized patients Observation Rooms Adjacent to each exam room is an observation room that allows direct, real-time, yet unobtrusive evaluation of standardized patient encounters. Simulation Theaters The PULSE Center has two fully-equipped medical simulation theaters for use with the SimBaby and SimMan manikins. The theaters are controlled by a central simulation control center where our simulation specialist can create a variety of scenarios to help medical students, emergency responders, nursing students and other health care professionals further develop their skills in a controlled environment.SimBaby SimMan Debriefing Rooms The PULSE Center has two debriefing rooms for post-simulation meetings. These high-tech meeting rooms feature widescreen televisions and fully networked video playback systems to allow for a full breakdown of the simulation and additional teaching related to what happened in the simulation. Trainers and observers can even watch the simulation unfold on the television through the closed- circuit video system. Simulation Central The Simulation Theaters are driven by a simulation specialist that controls the manikins and the scenarios to be carried out in the simulation experience. This control room allows the simulation specialist to monitor the simulation manikins and change the scenario in real time as the training happens.

January 16, 2009 UAMS Celebrates Opening of 10-story High-Tech Hospital University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) supporters, patients and their families today celebrated the opening of a 540,000-square-foot hospital replacing most of the patient care services in the original 52- year-old UAMS Medical Center building. The 10-level, nearly $200 million building incorporates the latest medical technology, larger all-private patient rooms and private rooms for infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Other design elements focus on creating a pleasant environment that promotes healing and provides ample space for family members to support loved ones during a hospital stay. The new hospital gives UAMS Medical Center 437 total patient beds – 333 adult beds and 64 newborn bassinets between the new facility and the existing Harry P. Ward Patient Tower that was completed in 1999, and 40 beds in the adjacent UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute that opened in December 2008. “This new addition to the campus will further bolster the international reputation that UAMS has earned for providing state-of-the-art care,” said Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, who spoke at the opening. “Arkansans take great pride in the exceptional medical treatment available at UAMS and the economic benefits it provides for the State.” Among the features and improvements in the new hospital: The new NICU features private baby rooms with special lighting, noise and temperature controls to meet each infant’s special needs. Each patient room includes family space, allowing parents to stay with their child.
