13 Each module you undertake will have a number of assessments linked to the module’s ‘learning outcomes’ Assessments types:  ‘Course work’, such as written assignments, practical reports, individual presentations/posters  Formal unseen examinations Details of each module assessments, learning outcomes and the marking criteria are available on via the Gazette entry for the module and the Module’s Blackboard site.Gazette entry for the module You should read the learning outcomes and marking criteria. 14 Assessment Submissions: All course work will be submitted electronically via Turnitin. Normally on either the Wednesday or Friday of the assessment ‘hand in week’ Details on module Blackboard site, and/or Timetable – Gazette Hard copy maybe required. If so Electronic versions must have identical content. 15 Assessment deadlines: Extensions will not be granted for module submission deadlines You are responsible for knowing hand dates and submitting to deadlines An assessment is ‘late’ if it is submitted after the advertised assessment deadline Assessments submitted within 7 days will be marked but final grade capped to 50% Assessments submitted more than 7 days after the deadline will be given 0% What happens if I submit late? Special Circumstances Reporting of Special circumstances Submit a fully completed Special circumstance form Submit all supporting documentation evidence. 16 Modules and Grades The overall mark for a module is calculated as the average mark derived from all the individual assessment components Failing an assessment may not mean you fail the module overall! Modules may have a number of assessments: Practical report (25%), presentation (25%), Final exam (50%) To pass a module at the first attempt you must achieve an average mark of 50% (grade range C-) or higher If you do not pass the module at your first attempt you will be allowed to undertake a maximum of two more reassessments to achieve a pass for the module Reassessments will be one or more of the failed component(s) The components retaken will depend on the grade achieved in that component and the marks required to achieve a pass mark for the module overall Components with a mark of 50% or higher cannot be reassessed Components with a mark below 40% must be reassessed The maximum mark for any module with a reassessed component is capped at 50% School of Medical Sciences 2016/17

17 Assessments Assessment Grades Categorical marking system All assessments are marked according to their respective categorical marking criteria, grades are then derived from whichever category the assessment work falls into Relationship between a categorical grade and its percentage (%) mark range equivalent School of Medical Sciences 2016/17

18 Final awards Examination Boards Final module marks and degree classifications are finalised and approved at official Examination Boards. First Examination board After the summer exam period Determines the final overall mark for Part 1 Diploma section and progression to research project (Part 2). Second (final) Examination board After final submission date of the research project (early October). Determines the final overall mark and final degree award classification. The overall mark degree will be calculated as (L7 -T + L7 -RP ) / 2 L7 -T is the mean mark across taught modules in PGT programme (Part 1 - diploma) L7 -RP is the mark for a PGT Research Project (MSE-4025) Review of Borderline Classifications - Regulations for Taught Programmes School of Medical Sciences 2016/17
