The brand owner, the organization that owns the specification of the trade item regardless of where and by whom it is manufactured, is normally responsible for the allocation of the GTIN. UNIQUENESS? The GS1 Company Prefix is the number allocated to individual company by GS1, as a member company. HOW? GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) used to identify any item upon which there is a need to retrieve pre-defined information GLN (Global Location Number) to identify physical location and legal entities where is a need to retrieve pre- defined information to improve the efficiency of communication with the supply- chain SCSC (Serial Shipping Container Code) for an item of any composition (e.g. logistic unit such as pallets) established for transport and/or storage which needs to be manage through the supply chain GIAI (Global Individual Asset Identifier)assign by the owner of the asset for diverse range of business applications (life- cycle tracking) GRAI (Global Returnable Asset Identifier)for identifying reusable package or transport equipment that are considered an asset. It is used to enable tracking as well as recording of all relevant data.

16 Global standards for automatic identification Rapid and accurate item, asset or location identification The BarCodes and GS1 Identification System have provided benefits to consumers around the world for over thirty years The most widely used physical identification standard in the world Supported by all open trade retailers globally Implemented by over 1,200,000 user companies in more than 140 countries More than 5 billion ‘beeps’ in the check-outs each day GS1TRACEABILITY SYSTEM-BARCODE

17 955 123432168 9 GS1 Prefix 3 digits The first 3 digit identify the GS1 member organization that allocates the number. This 3 digits prefix is allocated by GS1 to national member organization in the country. For Malaysia, GS1 Malaysia has been allocated the digit 995 Company and Item Number 9 digits The next 9 digits contain the company number and item number. The company number is allocated by national member organization to the individual companies. Each company in turn allocates the item number to each product. For better control and easier administration in the assignment of the number, a block of number is given to each company for its allocation to its product Check digit 1 digit The last digit is the check digit which serves as an accuracy check on the reading of the entire number by the scanning device GS1TRACEABILITY SYSTEM-BARCODE

18 Global standards for RFID-based identification More accurate, immediate & cost-effective visibility of information A global standard system that combines radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, existing communications network infrastructure and the Electronic Product Code (a number for uniquely identifying an item) Immediate and automatic identification and tracking of an item through the whole supply chain Improved efficiency and visibility in the supply chain GS1TRACEABILITY SYSTEM-EPCGLOBAL
19
What is Electronic Product Code (EPC)? The EPC is a unique number that is used to identify a specific item in the supply chain. The EPC is stored on a RFID tag, which combines a silicon chip and an antenna Benefit? For consumers, the EPC promises to enhance consumer service, reduce out- of-stocks, and provide better product selection. In addition, it has the potential to provide better protection from counterfeit products (including medications), to monitor product freshness for dated goods, and to provide easier identification for recalls For businesses, the EPC can help correct inefficiencies in the marketplace and bring price value to consumer. It also o provide significant annual savings, reduce the need for inventory held in “safety stock,” increase sales by reducing the number of out-of stock products, reduce transportation costs and shipping volumes, and provide more accurate forecasts and stock replenishments.
